Welcome fellow MN triathlete. My friend did IMCDA this year, it was hot, lets hope it's cooler next year.
There aren't too many half's in this neck of the woods early on, you'll have to go south to find one. There are several in April and May, one in April is the Gulfman Half Iron in TX, that might work for you if you really want to get one in before IMCDA. Hi, I'm new to forums.......but that's how I started doing tri's.
I plan to do IM Idaho this coming June and would like to connect up with someone doing it also. I would also like to do a half before the race. I'm definitely a middle of the road racer and do this for the fun (pain) of it.:D
