Blood in Urine

OK. Here is a pleasant topic.

Two weeks ago I took a hard fall on my mountain bike and landed hard on my lower back in the kidney area. It was swollen and painful for about a week and I took it easy with training. I had no pain peeing or anything like that and everything was fine.

Last Friday the soreness was gone and I went for an hour run. When I came back and I found that my urine was pretty red from blood. I had done biking, swimming and eliptical earlier in the week. I don't know if was related to the kidney bruise because I was not very well hydrated and I drank nothing during the run, but I have never had that issue before from running.

My urine cleared up in about an hour and there was never any pain. Two days later I tried running for just 15 minutes and noticed some blood. I have taken the last week off. I have not yet seen a doctor although I know I should. I have since had no issues and no pain. There has been nothing about my health that is out of the ordinary. I have done long stints on the bike, swimming, and on the eliptical without issue. It only occured the two times I tried to run.

I have an appointment to see the doctor, but should I worry? I'm afraid to try running again. I was preparing for a marathon in November, but that seems out right now as I've only run 1.15 hours now in the last two weeks.

In my last ironman I was peeing blood for about 15 miles. It was mostly because I had a very bad bladder infection, and my bladder was just under attack. It's common with those if it gets to your kidneys as well. I was told that the jarring of the running probably triggered it (I had been fine for the swim and bike -- no I didn't know I had one at the start). Let's just say most painful marathon ever!

Different basic problem, but could be a similar result of the jarring or something? They told me to worry more if it was blood with a thick consistency instead of just the watered down (maybe just platelettes? can't remember if it was just platelettes or no platelettes) that then I should worry more, but to have it checked out either way.

Definitely see a doc, and listen to your body!

you better go see a doctor ...asap.

It's called Hematuria... happened to me before and it was explained this way:
The bladder is like a sponge if it becomes dry from a deep dehydration, the walls inside the "sponge" start to rub together.
You bleed. Drinking more and flushing you kidney's helps with this...alot. As an ultrarunner I'e seen this many times.
My Dr. did however send me in for a proceedure to look at my kidneys to make sure everything was ok.
Drink more, all the time, and SEE THE DOC! (We hate it when nasty thigs happen to trifuelers.)

look under Internal/Physical Bloody Urine. It gives a real good run down on it.

Some is normal for endurance athletes. I have physicals at least once a year for my job and it's about half the time that I have traces of blood in the urine. If it's the first time that it's been noted there are some tests that should be run to make sure that it is related to the workouts. So get to the Doc, like yesterday.
