So, I just ordered my new bike (Scott Plasma Team, yay me!!!), and now I need pedals. I had Shimano pedals on my last bike, and now I am looking at the Look Keo pedals and the Speedplay X-series. What is the difference, is it personal preference? Is one better than the other? More for racing? Please help, there are so many options out there, and I have been riding and competing for less than 6 months!

It is a personal preference. There are differences in float, tension and the feel of the platform that can affect which you'd prefer. Personally I've ridden looks for quite awhile, including Keos, and have been nothing but happy with them.

I'd probably find a shop that sells both and is willing to let you try both on your bike and see what you like better.

I'm happy with my Keo pedals. However, I haven't used speedplay to compare. One of the complaints I've heard with speedplay is the greasing issue. I guess you have to lube the cleat?

Unless you have knee problems I would go with Keo's. Keo's will be similar to your Shimano's but better (ie, lighter, smoother going back to neutral, and better for clipping in and out of). If you have knee problems then go with the Speedplays (because of their float), otherwise definitely go with Keo's (even the Classic's, their entry level pedals are VERY good).

I like my KEO Sprints and agree with TriHard. If you have knee issues then Speedplays with more float would be a good option. Speedplay Zeros are configurable for fixed or float options, I'm considering these. I have a lot of friends who are very happy with their Speedplays. Good luck.

I have KEO Sprints and I love them. My friend recently got rid of a pair of speedplays- didn't like them compared to his old Shimanos....... But again, preference.

Congrats on the bike. I have the same one and LOVE it. It's speedy. On pedals, I have Time RXS on my Plasma, but Speedplay X5 on my roady. I like both pedals and don't see any problems with either. The speedplay's are easier to get into and I find it harder (for me) to get into the Time pedals. I like the free float on the speedplays because I have a quirky right knee and the speedplays let me knee shift a little. You'll love whichever pedal you decide on, I promise.

i've been riding speedplays for a season now. i using them for commuting, training, and racing. i really like them. adjustable float, dual sided entry. coming from a mt. bike background that was nice for me. having worked at a bike shop for a little while i would say it pretty much prefference between those pedals. they are both good. it is all in what feels better to you.

I've had Dura Ace 7800 pedals on both of my P3s. I love the pedals. Lighter and a wider platform than most. I did consider the Time RXS when I built my new P3, they are marginally lighter than the DA set. In the end, I decided to stick with what I know.
