Junk Food after a long workout?

OK, it took everything I had within me to not stop for some salty fries and a frosty this morning after my 55 mile ride and 20-minute run. I NEVER eat fast food (ok, maybe once a year at Chick-fil-A) so I'm not sure where this craving came from (the thought of fast food grosses me out!). But on occasion I get a strong desire for high-fat, high calorie junk food...I really try not to endulge, since that stuff is basically poison

Any of you ever get that craving? If so, why...and what do you do about it?

I don't get a craving for fast food but for comfot food. Following a 20miler on Saturday I rocked an amazing brunch at a local market.
After my final 100mile ride this past Sunday I ate a box of mac and cheese. It was low-fat but still made my day.

I'll usually treat myself to something after a difficult workout but it's usually not something huge. Maybe a cookie or a brownie but nothing like an entire cheesecake or tube of cookie dough.

It's all about the balance. One of the reasons I like tri training is precisely so I can eat bad every once in a while and not feel awful about it. Strangely, my junk food cravings subside when I'm training heavily, and I find I just don't want to eat fast food if I have a big/hard workout or a race coming up. Still, every once in a while a trip to the local Culver's (burger & custard chain in WI and other midwest states) sounds irrestistible, so if I've been "good," I'll go.

If I were much more hardcore about race results, etc., I might think differently, but tri isn't my whole life (right now).

There is a thought that your body craves what it lacks - are you taking in enough electrolytes before and during your training? Perhaps you are depleted.

If its once in a while go ahead eat it. I even think BBB puts it in his special needs!!!

Moderation is the key. When the McDonald's drive-thru becomes your second home then you have a problem.

I find that I crave less junk when I'm training heavily too... I want pasta or rice or something with beans or chicken and vegetables and turn up my nose at fast food. Though after rides of 60+ miles I want thick crust pizza. No other types of junk. I don't even particularly care for pizza when I haven't just finished a long ride, but I can't do without it afterwards. I spose I also like those culvers cheese curds but those are like little heart attacks so I only have those after a loooong ride.

I will indulge after an 'A' race. Like others mentioned I don't really get the cravings while training hard. I just do it as a reward. An occassional 'treat' won't hurt - only when it becomes a habit.

If you want to have some...go for it...!!!
A burguer...pizza, a milkshake....whatever...you train enough to give yourself a nice time with some junkfood....

If you are good on most days a little indulgence won't really hurt you. I like a trip to McDonalds or white castle once in a while, but I know I am going to exercise it away.

If I am having a long run or training day on a Saturday I talk the guys at work into getting a large Sicilian pizza, and I eat 4-6 slices.

I know the next day I will easily burn it off.:D

Nothing to it, but to do it

This is a constant battle for me. For the most part my will power prevails, but my cravings only intensify with heavy training.

I went about two months without Mickey D's and then finally gave in and had a couple cheeseburgers the other day - ohhhh, so good! And I had one of the best runs of my life the next day...

I agree with most of the posters though...moderation is the key. I don't think giving in once in a while does any harm.

Hmmm, not sure if that was supposed to be "best run" instead of "best runs". Tho, I guess after some greasy cheeseburgers it may have been both.

agree when i am in race mindset and really focused on an upcoming road race/tri i eat exceptionally well...

for some reason since i've become insanely active, i dont really crave horribly bad junk food. I crave to eat like 3 natty peanut butter/banana sandwiches on whole wheat or something. I get the craving to just eat insane amounts of healthier foods, with the occasional pizza thrown in there. I hate soda, it tastes gross. Micky D's never leaves me fealing full. TacoBell makes me, well, you know.

On days when i am riding a century, or doing a 4 hour brick...i can justify it without question or guilt.

But be warned, if you put a pint of Ben and Jerry's "chubby hubby" in front of me it better have a padlock and an electric fence or i'll devour it

gotta love tri :) where the inner fat kid can shine through, but never be fat

ok, so call me a FREAK! I'm a little weird when it comes to junk food. Ever see "Super-size Me"? If not, then that might deter you from your fast food cravings

Anyway, next time I will submit. I guess I struggled because I endulged with some awesome pizza last night. But pizza's not junk food...its one of the food groups, right?

I think my electrolytes were off a bit too, bec it turned out to be warmer by the end of the bike and run than its been the last few days. So I guess I needed something to replace the loss.

Just stop at DQ for some yummy treats. Oh, so good. I indulge in some junk every now and then. Nothing wrong with scratching an itch. As long as it doesn't spread liek poison ivy. Then dont scratch.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Me and my training partners just pig out after every race. We usually get pizza and wings and go crash all day at one of our houses and watch scrubs dvd's. It's fun to live like the other half just for a bit.

i'm a big believer in the 95% rule. be good 95% of the time. cut loose no more than 5% of the time. yeah, i occasionally fall off the wagon, then i have to run to catch back up ti it.

family, work, then tri!
