Running With A Brace
What was your injury? Why are you wearing the brace? How much running are you doing? What kind of surfaces are you running on?
Please give a little more info on your injury.
I had my ACL reconstructed about 9 years ago and I still wear a brace, and for longer distances I will always have to.
After a few miles I feel it. A marathon is a pain management challenge for me, and the brace makes it bearable.
I use a cho-pat dual action knee strap

which has been really working out for me.
I have issues above and below my knee cap which this addresses.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Okay- I may have been a bit unclear, my bad.
It is essentially a suppression sleeve, slid over my vastus lateralis. I severely strained my vastus lateralis, the outer most quadricep muscle.
I am running every other day, and running on grass/trails as often as I can, and trying to keep it flat. I am running at about a 7:00 min/mi comfortably.
Thanks again guys!

A muscle injury should not heal up completely in a few months without lingering effects, so keep the brace until you are healed.

Okay-
I just consulted the trainers, (albeit they are NCAA trainers, who also talk to football and hockey players)
they suggested next week to begin running lightly every day, and remove the brace.
I plan on using intuition, and feel, when evaluating how much I can remove and what I can do.
My recovery history looks like this
Sun: 6.2 miles
Monday: X-Train
Tuesday:11 Miles
Wednesday:X-Train
Today PM: 7 Miles

I have many, many knee issues(five knee surgeries) and the cho-pat is the best knee brace I've found, it keeps your knee parts from moving around and it's a lot more comfortable than the other knee braces I've tried.

I believe who ever designed the braces really did their homework on running mechanics. I don't dread long distances like I used to with a longer sleeve brace.

So now that I can run again, under the advisement of my trainer on every other day, I have adopted a new training philosophy, that is slowly being indoctrinated into my thick skull.
Rest is when fitness is gained; training is when you break down the body.
So for running now, I am wearing a light, elasticized support-sleeve. How long should I be wearing this? When do I know to remove it? I only wear it when running, not cycling or using the elliptical thing. Any advice would really help me!
Thanks!
