I was eating spinach salads a couple of times a week---now no more
What happened with spinnach is just the tip of the iceberg. Every piece of produce that is farmed in this country has many opportunities to get contaminated. In this case, it was spinnach. Next time, it really could be anything else. The cause of the problem is not the spinnach, but probably the way it is handled during processing.
The next problem could be carrots, cucumbers, mushrooms... You name the produce -- it is all susceptible to being mishandled and contaminated.
While not a failsafe way to combat the problem, buying organic produce whenever possible, and thoroughly washing your vegetables and fruit with soap and water (or Fit vegetable wash) is a good step in helping to ensure your food is as clean as possible.
I used to make fun of my girlfriend for wanting to wash everything with soap and water... but it really is the only way to help protect yourself.
I only quit eating the spinach when it was taken off the shelves. Eating it again now. No problems (with the bagged stuff). But my mom saw some news program about a week ago where testers measured the bacteria in the bagged (pre-washed) salads and it measured extremely high - due to the moisture being locked in and sitting on the lettuce. So even the pre-washed stuff needs to be washed!
I pity da fool!
I still haven't seen it back on the shelves here yet. Then again Wi got hit pretty hard. Not even Subway has spinach yet. :(
