Oh, I am sooo bummed!!
I have been planning my base building phase, had a 1/2 mary planned for Oct 28th, just started fitness instructing, getting ready to start teaching yoga, and just really gearing up, running, biking, swimming and doing great.... and last night I was playing racquetball and came down wrong on my right foot and broke my fibula bone!!!

what a drag!!! I have been down all day and it is driving me nuts!! I don't know how I'm going to do this for 6 - 8 weeks!! Help!! Any suggestions in how to pass the time and not go insanely crazy???? Anyone ever have this happen???

I've never broke anything before and yes it hurts, but not being active is what is killing me and it is only the first day!!

help fellow Trifuelers!!!

Ouch, that sucks!

A broken ankle must be difficult, can't run, ride, or even hit the pool. Maybe focus on some strength training and core work to gear up for '07. Perhaps Yoga for flexibility as well. All will help with performance when you're better.

Keep your head up, now you can do strength training of some sort, relax and do a plan so when you start back you can be focus. Sorry about your misfortune, and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Bummer! I'd try some
strength training...maybe pool running (I'm not sure how you are casted) Yoga..
You know...I've met lots of triathletes that have busted themselves up playing Racquetball,basketball,tennis,rugby...basicly anything that involves a ball...usually ankles or knees. To be honest I avoid those things like the plaque because 1. I suck at them. and 2. I don't want to trash a tri or running or biking season because of a pickup game of hoops.

That really sucks. Injuries can deal a blow to your plans, but if your shuffle your priorities around, they cna actually be a good thing. Focus on the things you might have neglected a little if this hadn't happened. Strength and flexibility being the big ones. Really work your core up and get stretchy, this will make your comeback quicker and easier, and you'll be better for it.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Ask your doc or a PT about the possibility of pool running. Better than nothing!

That stinks - sorry. Best to work on other aspects, strength training, yoga, pilates etc.

Thanks guys! I am feeling mentally better today... actually did some 'laps' around the house on my crutches... got my heart rate up and worked my left leg and upper body.

When the swelling goes down and I get my 'real' cast, I'll ask the Dr. about pool work and upper body strength training. I think I could ride a recumbant bike at the gym and like you all said core work!! Especially with a cast it will add some resistance. So I'm feeling a bit better. Happened for a reason, just not sure what.... Now I can really take the time to read the Triathlete's Training Bible and get my plan together... thanks for all your encouragement!! Keep it coming as I know it will be a long recovery, about 6 - 8 weeks.

thanks!! Shell

Injuries can be a blessing in disguise, I damaged the ulnar collateral ligament in my thumb last year which actually got me into Tris because I wasn't able to lift for a long while(couldn't hold a bar). Couldn't be happier!
