I love trail running
I do alot of my training on trails too.
The difference between trails and asphalt or concrete is amazing.
When doing my long training runs for marathons my recovery is so much faster so I am better prepared for the event.
Your balance and muscles get developed better because tou need to compensate for uneven surfaces too.
It is also safer than running roadside, especially if you like to run to music.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Until this last August that I was still in my home town Quito in Ecuador, the big bulk of my running mileage I used to do it at a park with beautiful trails to run...is so nice to see the sun coming out, while you are crossing a forest...smelling the moisture...the grass...boy I miss those runs...
Trail running is really fun...and as you said Star trail running awesome.

I trail run when I have my most important A race of the season coming in 2 months or so. This beacuse the last part of the running leg in the tri takes place inside the jungle in Tikal National Park so I do it in order to be ready and to simulate race conditions for those last 7Km.
HAve to agree time passes by a lot faster and even though you run a lot you never end up feelling tired in the same way as if you had run on pavement.
BUT one time during this trail running I heard a humming noise and for my surprize I was running ahead a bunch of bees that where flying in the oposite direction. I turned around and realy RAN the whole way back.

So where are you trail running? There lots of place to hit up. I know there is a trail runnign club that advocates running on the bike trails at Alafai and it irritates the heck out of me. Especially on weekends. Dangerous and illegal. The horse trails and hiking trails there are cool, but the bike trails are marked as such.
Flatwoods and Croom offer great multi use trails!
Sorry to get preachy about Alafai, but there was a very dumb couple running on a bike trail (ignoring the signs) and would not move on a downhill section and ignored everyone else. I'm pretty passive, but was tempted to deliver a butt whooping. ARGH!
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Trail running is...our original running. It is what we are programmed for and designed to do. I love it and spend most of my time on trails with about 20% road time to make sure my legs can handle the pounding of road racing.
Out my front door I have access to 50 miles of trails...more if I want...deer wildlife and serenity. All in the middle of the DC area.

Triguy: I trail run at Flatwoods. I always do my long runs in the grass and trails there. I'm a little leary of running alone (mostly because of the wild pigs:eek: ), but since not many people can make it there by 7am and run for 2 hours...its kinda hard to find running buddies.
I did the 1/2 marathon at Alafia last year in November and it was tough man! I had just completed the Florida Challenge (i.e. 1/2 Great Floridian) a few weeks prior, and so it was my toughest running race by far. I would like to do it again, especially since I've spent more time on the trails this year, but I'll just have finished the 70.3 in Clearwater...so, again, I'll be burnt.
Do you run at Flatwoods or Alafia?

I run at Flatwoods and at Temple Terrace Golf Club on Monday mornings. I havent built back up to 2 hour runs yet, but I will be during the off season. I live right down the street from the Bruce B Downs enterance to Flatwoods.

I will be incorporating trail running into the mix this year. This past season I did all of my training on the road. And a HIM that I did was 90% trail. That really racked my ankle. I didn't really have the proper strength in my ankles - that you get from trail running. So looking forward to spending some time with the trees.

Maybe this should go under "how to make running fun" but.... After 12 years of running, I just started trail and grass running a year ago. And I LOVE it! There is nothing like running through a sandy, twisting trail as the sun comes up. I forget about time and heart rate and everything else, and just enjoy nature. I ran 10 miles this morning and it felt like nothing. The benefits of trail/grass running is that the soft ground cushions the blow to your knees...so after running this morning, I feel great! Such a difference to running on pavement, or dare I say...concrete.
Anyway, if you haven't tried it, get out there! I've done a 1/2 marathon (a hilly trail that kicked my butt) and a 15K off road race and I'm looking forward to those races in the off season. Get out there and get dirty!:D
