This is really good, the one caveat I'd add to the morning piece is that it presumes you wake calmly. For those of us who leap from bed with a noisy alarm or barking dogs, that HR right after you wake up likely isn't your true resting HR. So, you might want to get up, use the bathroom, and then lay back down for 2 or 3 minutes to re-calm yourself.

I have heard some people say that their HR is higher on a full bladder to, so the idea of getting up etc. THEN taking the pulse is better. Good point Tamara

The night after a long event or hard training I go to bed with my HRM on. When I wake up I stay in bed for a few minutes and check my HR.
I usually take a rest day or have a really easy workout the day after anyway.

This is common knowledge for most but here is something I found that is interesting for those that tend to train alot, or even train hard at times. It's the use of Morning Resting Heart Rate (MRHR) for identification of overtraining and the necessity to back off.

Basically, Resting Heart Rate (RHR) is important to know because it indicates the amount of mental and physiological stress your body is experiencing. For example, if you know that your resting
heart rate is usually around 65 beats per minute (bpm) and one day you see it at around 70-75BPM, this indicates elevated stress levels or incomplete recovery.
An elevated resting heart rate suggests that you need to reduce or completely cease exercise until RHR returns to normal levels. If you obtain a reading 10% or more above your normal resting rate you should not exercise.
