Ah-choo
I would try and get some rest, and take ester-c.
Zicam D helps me with the congestion and lasts about 4 hours.
I find my lungs and airways open up when I am running:D
I take echinacea (spelling?) every time my kids or wife have a cold or any of my students are sick. It is an herb that supposedly strenghtens the immune system. I swear that since I have been taking it (3 years) I have not had a serious cold. The key is to take it immediatley after you feel the symptoms.

My understanding of echinacea is that it actually attacks your immune system to make it stronger, like lifting weights damages your muscles. It's the process of reacting to the attack that strengthens the immune system. I've read to avoid echinacea once you get sick and to only take it when you are healthy.

Interesting... I've always heard it helps you not get sick and to take it if people around you are getting sick. Yet the boy and I tried that this year when my roommate got sick and both of us got sicker than we have in a while! Maybe that is part of why.
One of the problems with echinacea is wether or not it actually works or if it is just a placebo. Some studies have shown it does nothing and others suggest it helped to reduce the length of the cold. The quality of the product sold by different companies is also in question as is the effectiveness of pill form vs. liquid.
It could be one of those things that works for some people and not others or maybe the placebo effect is what works for me. Either way I have been very happy with the results.
Good luck with the marathon and with beating the cold. I have had some of my best races when I have not felt 100%.

I woke up with a cold yesterday, and i was wrecked with it all day in work. I did my usual cold remedy: disolvable vitamin c drinks, lots of them, two pints of beer after work to help me sleep, and then when i went to bed i wore a hoody with the hood up with an extra blanket, and as it always does, it worked. I guess with a marathon coming up the beer's out of the question, but the "sweat it out of ye with a pile of blankets and lots of clothes" always works for me. and vitamin c, lots of it. good luck buddy.

Alright, 3 days before a marathon and I've woken up with what seems to be cold symptoms, although I'm still holding out for allergies. Everyone in the northeast has been spewing germs for the past month and I've done pretty well at dodging sneezes and coughs, or so I thoght.
I know I can't get rid of it if it's a cold, but who has had some success with home remedies to reduce the effects and get back some lung capacity.
Forget the Nyquil, I'd rather sit with a bottle of JD, but it's too close to race day.
