Ironman Kentucky 2007
I have participated in several shorter events in Kentucky and really enjoy that part of the country. I certainly would consider IM Kentucky an option for the future.

What are the weather conditions like that time of year? In particular the humidity?
Any ideas of when registration will take place for next years race?

Athletes can register for the event beginning on October 21 at 3 p.m. EST by visiting ironman.com. The 2007 event will reach capacity at 2,100 athletes and includes a $50,000 professional prize purse. For event-related questions, contact the Event Director, Steve Meckfessel via email at .
Beautiful countryside, but hot and humid summers. It's the south, ya'll. And, I think they're calling it Ironman Louisville, not Ironman Kentucky.

WTC does call it Ford Ironman Louisville. However, it's going to get a nickname like all the others. IMKY? IMLou? Help us out here.
I used to live not too far from Louisville - although it starts to cool off a bit near the end of August, the race will still be very hot and humid. Louisville is a cool city!
Will be keeping an eye on this one. (planing ahead for 2008)

Hey, I'd definitely consider doing it some day if they call it IMLou... :D

IMLou.
But maybe I'm being an old curmudgeon here, but Louisville?
I've been there..great city...been to the Derby.
Is Ironman going to start poping up all over the place thereby making it that much less special? I thought the number was just right...now another? "THEY" must be making an aweful lot of dead presidents at this Ironman business to add another one..oh right...they are! They got my money!

I like having another one not too far away.
And obviously the market is not saturated yet. With IMoo selling out in less than an hour - the demand is there, so now we have IMLou.

Being from the 'Ville, I love the idea of holding the event here.
I have no excuse now for tri-ing my first IM.
Here is the average temp info:
Avg High Low Mean Record high record low
Aug 87°F 61°F 74°F 3.99 in. 102°F (1962) 41°F (1986)
I have not heard anything official, but Ford has some pretty strong ties here with two plants. That may have had something to do with putting Louisville in the mix.
Regardless, we have a great town and we welcome you all!!:

IMLou is a WTC event.
If you go to ironmannorthamerica.com who sponsors all the IM's in North America...they make it very clear they have nothing to do with the Louisville race.

being from Louisville and living here my whole life, I am excited! I have known about this for awhile and couldn't wait for today when they offically announced it.
Louisville is a big city with a small hometown feel. Southern hospitality, friendly people and beautiful countryside.
I am really thinking about doing this as my first IM. The weather will be hotter than hell. Don't let the temps fool you, the avg. is around 87* however, the hummidity will kill you. Usually the hummidity is at least 85% if not higher. Its pretty miserable during Aug. but everyone wants a challenge!
And just ot let you know, Louisville is pronounced: Louahville We can always tell the out of townerns from the locals :p

Interesting. Any know difference having WTC run the event rather than IMNA?

Was planning on trying for IMFL '07 but this will be a lot closer to home. Guess this will be my first attempt at IM.

I wonder how this will affect the dynamic between IMNA and WTC as well.

That is very odd. Hard to believe this is a Kona Qualifier but is ignored by IronMan NorthAmerica. I thought WTC and IM North America, etc were all basically working hand in hand.

I vote for IM Ky :)
But yeah, I'm also curious to see how the difference with IMNA/WTC will play out. I thought IMNA had claims to any Kona qualifiers in the US... must have been wrong, but I'm wondering why this is the first one for WTC.
I'd consider it for next year... continuing my streak of doing new IMs their first year (I did IMAZ that way... and that was to complete my first year of tris).

I'm sort of mystified by the WTC/IMNA thing and not sure what it means...I guess we'll see.
Wonder where the swim will be... The OhiO River? Hope they stop the barge traffic.
And...oh Kyillee you BAD girl...IM KY. Slick! ;)

:p I was going more for Ky... not KY... as in my nickname from my sister (NO it is NOT saying the letters, but saying it as a word!)

Same day as Ironman Canada...
I wonder if they did that to give people another end-of-August race and lighten the people load on IMC.
Weird that it's WTC and not an official IM event...I didn't think the IM name was allowed to be used unless the IM corporation said so.
Or are they both one and the same? I just confused myself.

WTC is the trademark owner for Ironman. They put on most of the 70.3 races in the U.S. and around the world as well as the Kona race. I believe that Ironman North America licenses the right to use the name, logo, etc. and puts on 8 races in the U.S. and Canada (6 Ironmans and 2 Ironman 70.3 events). I'm not positive, but I don't think that WTC "owns" IMNA--it's just a licensing arrangement. I would have guessed that IMNA had exclusive rights to put on 140.6 distance Ironman-branded races in the U.S., but that is apparently not the case.
On the one hand, there is certainly excess demand for some of the most popular races these days (Lake Placid, Canada, and Wisconsin), so having a couple more to take the pressure off registration right now is a good thing from an athlete's point of view.
I'm hoping, however, that this development doesn't mean that IMNA could eventually lose its licensing rights to do IMLP, Canada, IMoo etc. They put on a darn good race. Also, I really hope that WTC won't "flood the market" with fly-by-night events that aren't as well organized, only last a couple of years, have trouble finding the army of volunteers needed, and then go away. That could end up damaging both WTC and IMNA, which would be no good at all. IM Louisville will be a big test to see if this will work.

well it looks like this will be the IM for next year for me and Mike... unless anything changes when we discuss it again, that was the though yesterday!
I'm a bit excited :)

PJT is correct. WTC is the actual owner of Ironman and is the corporation that puts on the Championships in Kona. IMNA license the brand to put on qualifying events in North America. I think WTC wants more control over additional races which is why they launched the 70.3 series in which they manage some of those and then now Ironman Kentucky.
I don't, however, see this negatively impacting the IMNA arrangement or races. They are just too large and popular for WTC to not continue their arrangement with IMNA. Plus I believe the licensing deal is very long term so even if WTC tries to go it alone it'll be a long time before that happens.

Right. IMWI was signed for another 5 years. As long as they (WTC or IMNA) continue to deliver high-quality events, then all should be good.

I always thought they needed another race or two in the middle of the country due to the obvious demand. This is a little further east than I would've thought, but hey, you take what you can get. I hope it goes well. I just hope it doesn't fill too fast (but I'm not holding my breath). I have my first half the following weekend and I'm waiting to see how it goes before committing to my first IM distance race.

Haven't posted in a while here, but I am in. I am calling this event IMKFC as in Kentucky Fried Chicken cause this is how we are gonna feel while running in that heat and humidity?
I live in the Nashville area so I am familiar with the weather, I am acutally looking forward to losing some weight next summer while training, :D
I know there has been talk of the swim, will it point to point? What will the temperature of the water be? Seems like it will be too warm for a wetsuit. Does anyone know?
There is a great thread over at slowtwitch where one of the race people has chimmed in with some info (http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1024965).
Sounds like it will be a point to point swim (downstream, but that shouldn't matter since basically no current since the current is controlled) because of boats/timing reasons. It will be boarder line for wetsuits.
Bike and run will go from flat to hilly. On the bike, lots of rollers. Tip given was to ride Hwy. 42 to LaGrange, KY if you get a chance.
The guy's summary: "The swim portion of the event will be in the Ohio River. And don't be alarmed. We have been using the river for years, including the last five Tri America Triathlons. The bike will, hopefully, go out to LaGrange and back twice. A two lap course in some of the prettiest countryside you will ever see. And the run will cross over into So. Indiana, but that's as far as we have gotten. Regardless, you will love what we have in store, and I know you great athletes will feel at home in Louisville. "

Great thread. I just finished IMCDA as my first IM this summer (hot as hell there) and really haven't been training or really wanting to do an IM for a while and then BOOM this race. Its too close to home and several of my friends are doing their first at this race so I had to sign up.
Looking forward to the race, I think I may do the OLY race they have at the same venue in July 07.
Are they having that July race in 07? From that thread it sounded like not...

I have signed up. I couldn't pass up the inagural IMLou since it is in my hometown.
I have riden the roads that the course is going to be on and the course will be flat at the start and then the rolling hills hit and the depending on the way they decide to head back to town it can get really bad or not so bad.
The run is going to going to be tough because of the weather and will also have rolling hills on it. I am pretty sure they are going to hit Cherokee Park where you will run one of the big hills. The finish is going to be at 4th Street Live, which is the downtown entertainment district.
This is going to be an awesome race. I have already started telling my family and friends about. I am doing my best to spread the word to everyone I know.
Count me in. Paid my money. (ouch!)
Swore I would never go to one, so how could I say "no" when it came to me?

Well, I bit the bullet and signed up. Now I just need to find the right "training plan". Has anyone followed the Ironman one here on Trifuel?

I used the 36 week Ironman training plan
http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/training-programs/36-week-ironman-training-program-000649.php
I made some modifications and I did miss some workouts but it was a good place to start.
It seems long but incorporates a good base building phase.
Look at several plans and see how they figure into your schedule.
Good luck!!:D
yeah, that was the one that I was planning on using. Thanks!
If better is possible, good is NOT enough."
Well, the race is now sold out. It took approx. 9 days. That is a faster sellout than either Coeur d'Alene (1 month) or Arizona (about 4 months). I guess the demand for another IM relatively close to the East Coast was certainly strong.
I'm using the Trifuel 36 week plan, with some modifcations, for IMLP next year. I've compared it to several other plans, including an expensive coached program of a friend and I think it's solid. If you don't need your hand held by a live coach (No offense intended)I think it would be worth it.

Anton,
Thanks - don't worry no offense taken. I am not that sensitive :).
I felt the same way about the plan - I did a lot of comparisions and I really liked the self coaching aspect. I am probably going to have to change some of the days around to fit with life but I am going to use it.

I liked the plan because I was able to adjust it.
I kept with the weekly numbers. I couldn't always do the workouts in the order they were specified but I tried to do the number of workouts in each discipline, and for the amount of time indicated.
I did miss some workouts because of various life events(work, kids, eating, breathing, etc...) I would start fresh each week and make adjustments based on the previous week if needed.:D
