Campers and racing

Given the logistics of my local races (mostly sprint and olys in Southern california), I have a routine now where I drive to the location of the race the day or night before in my camping van and sleep (or try to) in the van, then pop out with my gear and bike right at the race site.

Do any others do this? I started out reserving motel rooms and spending a lot of money doing this or just waking up at ungodly hours (3am to drive out to a 7am race start).

It seems to me like there would be a great partnership to be made between a beach/lake-side campground and triathlon race organizers. The campgrounds would provide great staging spots for parking and transition areas close to shore and racing roads...

I do the same for adventure races. Most tris I've done that are farther than "drive out there that morning" are long (1/2 IM or IM) and I get there a few days in advance and then use a hotel room.

I always stay at the campground the race is being held at when possible although not all races are held in such locations. When I was heavy into Adventure Racing I would say that 90% of the racers would camp out at the race site but those events are almost always held in campground type areas and since you usually had a 4am or 5 am race start it was tough to stay in a hotel.

I camp whenever possible...it makes racing more affordable for me.
Most races don't seem to mind if you camp out, descreetly, the night before at the race site. Some RD's like Rob Vigoretto and tricolumbia try to offer camping when possible.
I feel the same...it should be an option...unfortunately, I think SOME RD's sort of like to pump up the local hotel numbers..makes their races more popular among the locals and hence more likely to be welcome in town and enabling them to continue to make money as RD's.

Always. I havea minivan I sleep in and it works great for me. Sometimes I just sleep in the parking lots of the transition site.

Several months ago someone proposed a home stay sort of thing for traveling and visiting trifuelers...still a good idea...
