"What doesn't kill you, hurts like HELL... but doesn't kill you"! - some commercial
Friel has some great training ideas. The only thing he seems to be missing or maybe he is just "dumbing" things up for us newbies but he stays away from doing much brick work. I think bricks are KEY to triathlon training because nothing else can prepare you for what the run will feel like the way a good brick can. Now you shouldn't overdo it with bricks and overtrain but they do have a place in an athlete's program.
Plus I like training twice or three times a day with a short break (not a true brick) and he doesn't seem to think much of that either but he is the pro so maybe I should listen! :)

mdd.
For this whole year I used Friel´s book and when you already planed your year and go to the specifics he DOES have bricks in the workouts he includes in your training plan.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
The more bricks you can do the better. Just listen to the body.

Even on days you don't have a brick planned, just a 10-15 minute transition run will do a lot for your ability to run off the bike. And are one of my favorites. Plus help stay away from overtraining.

Bricks done often,I think, are a danger and source of many injuries.
Transition runs done often...a must.

Thanks for the insight and the suggestion of Transition runs. They sound like a great way to cool down after a ride while adding something to your overall race ability. I am using Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible to design a 1 year program for next season so I will just stick with that and see what happens. I didn't have much organization or periodization to my training this past year so I am expecting stronger results using Friel's methods.
