10 speed chain on a 9 speed drive train?
get a SRAM or Wipperman and forget the Shimano chains. The SRAM/Wipperman chain have a master link (I think that is what it is called) that allows you to take the chain off and put it back on without reomving pins and all that. I've had great success with my SRAM 9 speed (got it new on ebay for $35) and Wipperman is TOP OF THE LINE. They make great, great, great chains. Also, do what the Shimano website tells you, not what some shop guy says. I'm pretty sure the 10 speed chain in thinner than the 9 speed.
Agreed. SRAM is the way to go. Wipperman chains are MONEY if you have the extra funds though. I use SRAM chains religiously, the quick link makes things so much easier...I have no idea why Shimano hasnt done this yet.
I think it may have been the shop guy's first day, or maybe he truly just doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm about 90% sure that the 9 and 10 sp chains are NOT compatible. I would listen to the shimano website instead of risking your drivetrain.
If you wish to be out front, then act as if you were behind.
On my old bike I ran a Shimano 10-speed chain on a nine speed cassette with no problems. However, I agree with GLBRUM. On my new bike I have an SRAM Hollow-Pin Power Chain, which IMO is a better product. I have never used Wipperman, so I can’t comment there. Sounds like your LBS is just trying to sell you something they have in stock vs. having to order something. Also, some guys just never like to mix components (ie Shimano cassette with an SRAM chain).
I third the SRAM chains.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
Thanks all. I found a 9-speed SRAM 991 (the hollow pin one) for $31 shipped at probikekit.com so I think I'll go with that one.
I believe that the 10-speed chains are more narrow than the old 9-speed cassets used to be. It is my understanding if you bought a shimano 9 speed casset from this year that they should accomodate the same size chain. I agree about getting the SRAM, and it looks like you did, but for the future, if your LBS is willing to sell you a chain that you dont think fits, they should also be willing to put the chain on and size it for you with the purchase (in which case if said chain wasn't compatible, its their problem to fix right then).

I was at my LBS today looking for a new chain for my 9-speed tri bike. Bike shop guy recommended an Ultegra 10-speed chain, and assured me that it would work as well or better than a 9-speed chain.
Shimano's website, on the other hand, says that the chain is "not compatible" with a 9-speed system.
Does anyone have experience running a 10sp chain on 9 speed cassette, chainrings, etc. who can give a point of view here?
Thanks,
PJT
