I have an '06 cannondale R1000 with clip on aerobars. it has the factory saddle on it presently (cannondale road). after about an 45 min. to an hour, things start to fall asleep because i'm riding up on the nose of the saddle. my right foot falls asleep also. it first started when riding on the bars, but now happens at group rides when i'm back on the hoods or in the drops. my local bike shop seems to think that i may need a new saddle or need to move the one i have forward a tad. they don't buy into the "cutout" saddles and seem to think that they are marketed toward men's insecurities. they say the rails of the cutout actually hurt more. i tend to agree since there aren't any cutout style saddle in the pro peleton to my knowledge. they all just ride high quality leather saddles with top of the line shorts. i haven't done anything so far because i'm researching it.

what are you guys' experiences with this and how did you fix it?

I found the perfect saddle. Its called the SMP Strike.. I've struggled with pain for 4 years til my bike shop showed me this beauty! This is the female version...its quite cushy. The male version has a little less padding and is more narrow. The race version is very narrow and sleek. Check it out at http://www.sellesmp.com/en/default.htm. Its worth the $$.

The thing that I've found that helps the most is getting up out of the saddle every 10 minutes or so, this releaves pressure and will shift your body position a little when you sit back down. At the LBS I work at we've had great luck with the Specialized body geometry saddles (I don't have any personal experience with them since I found a saddle that worked for me before I started working there). They come in different widths, to match how far apart your sit bones are. You sit on this memory foam thingie for about 30 secs and then flip it over and it suggest a size depending on your riding position.

Some people will also suggest a saddle with more padding at the from (many tri saddles are this way), but I found those to be far worse for me.

I think it is part saddle, part saddle position, part sitting correctly.
Everyone is unique, you just have to keep adjusting until you find your comfort zone.

You will know it when you find it.

I also try and get out of the saddle every 10 minutes or so to stretch anyway.

Nothing to it, but to do it

You might want to check out fi'zi:k's Arione Tri. I just built a new bike and was hesitant to go away for the Selle San Marco Azoto Triathlon Gel. That saddle was very well padded in the nose. But during my recent bike fitting I tried the Arione Tri and now I understand why you see so many. Very comfortable!

As beads mentioned, saddles are individual specific. What works for one does not always translate. But the Arione Tri seems to work for most. Just a thought. I'd try tweaking your position on the saddle before just dropping the $$.

If you continue to have problems you might want to consider switching to a road bike saddle. Some people just can not ride on the "nose" of the saddle which is how tri saddles are designed so if you ride in the back of the saddle alot then a road saddle will work for you. You might lose a TINY bit of aero doing that but it doesn't matter how aero you are if you can not feel your private regions! :)

SAddles are very personal. My MTB has a Selle Italia Flite Gel, and it works for me on that bike. I hated the stock saddle. My Tri Bike Has a San MArco Tri Aspide that I LOVE, but it wont work for everyone. The ITM saddles are weird, but they work well, too.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I'll second trithis04...the Arione is awesome for me. I have been riding one on my tri bike for about a year and a half and I just put one on my road bike.

I went through 3 saddles before I found the tri-arione from fizik. I also ride up on the front of the saddle. Works great for me. Unfortunately, it is a trial and error process to find the one that works for you.
