Hello everyone.

let me thank everyone up front for the help. This website has been invaluable in all of my triathlon life. I just started triathlon two years ago and did nothing but sprints my first year. This year i did my first olympic and a half marathon. This next year i am going to kick it up another notch and do a marathon in late April and a half sometime during the summer.

I was wondering first of all, what i need to be doing in the "off-season" to keep a good base. I am going to go back to the weight a couple of days a week but i want to keep a good aerobic base.

My second question is, how do i incorporate my marathon training into my plan without letting the swimming and biking slide. My goal is to run a sub 4:00 marathon and to just finish the half. my longest ride to date is 50 miles and my longest swim to date is 1.2 mile swim. My longest run is the half marathon but when i was finished i knew i could have finished the whole thing. I come from a track/football background so running is by far my strongest event.

Again thanks for the guidance. I am a very structured person and like to track my workouts so if someone can point me toward a workout i would be forever appreciative.

Help me raise money for the LAF by donating anything that you can. Thank you so much!

good deal, good deal. I'd say try and find a 1/2 sometime in july/august. That would be your best bet to get some training in after the mary. Since you have about 7 months until the marathon, you obvoiusly have a lot of time. Make the marathon your focus and once that is over worry about the half. Let's say you take January 1 - April 25 for your marathon training. During that period, swim 2 days per week and ride 1 time. Make that ride 30-40 miles, maybe up to 50 if it doesn't take too much out of you. Make it a very aerobic ride, just to get out there and make sure your legs don't forget how to ride. I'd say swim 1500-2000 yds for the swimming. Again, it doesn't hgave to be hard, but since swimming is all technique, it can leave you pretty quickly. I'm going to assume a 1500 yd swim won't kill you. Maybe just work up to 1500 by the time the Mary hits. You should be able to tackle that training while training for the Mary. Once the mary comes and goes, you will have a running base that will carry you through the Half. trust me on this one. I carried a Half IM base worth of running through 6 months of no running to a 10k PR. I'd say ramp up the cycling and running once the mary is over and run maybe 2 days a week. Again, just to keep your legs moving (running wise). I have no doubt you will knock both out of the park. Especially becuase you have a running background. good luck. sorry for making this so long. I'm wordy.

I don't know what your marathon training plan (if you even have one) but I think it could be a bog benefit to you to work on your bike endurance between now and the begininng of your mary training. Whether you start Jan 1 or whatever, you have about 4 months until then and you can build a wicked base between now and then. That would do wonders for you come May when you are ramping the cycling back up again.

I'm bored at work and my mind if on overload, so here's some more stuff. Doing weights is a good idea. 2-3 a week can be very beneficial. I don't know what you plan on doing for weights, but I heard something a while back that was very interesting regarding weight training. In our sport, we naturally build endurance by going out and swimming, cycling, or running for a large amount of time, so why do we hear of workouts for triathlon of 15-20 reps at lighter weight? That's good to keep strength up during season, but you want to get stronger right? For get that 15 rep crap! For starters maybe, but once you get in there for 2 weeks or so, let 'er rip man (within reason, ofcourse). Get in there and really lift some weight. I'd focus on legs only or make that the 75% focus. I've gotten the same "bulk" from swimming as I have from lifting weights for upper body. Do squats, lunges, step ups (those 3 are really good for bike strength) leg curl and leg extension are good too.

One other thought on overall training for the Mary and Half. Give your body a few weeks to adapt to the running while mixing in swimming and cycling. You wil soon realize that your body can handle that much "stress" it just needs a little while to adapt to it.

I'm sure I could go on, but I'll stop here.

Jeepers..I was going to add something but glbrum beat me to ...just about everything! :)
I think it's important to cycle off of stuff now and then...
Right now I'm training for a Mary ,50 miler and The Goofy Challange...so right now mostly running. Still swim...some and bike...some..Lifting in the AA phase for next years IMs.
In spring less running more swimming and biking.
I guess it depends what "A" race you are training for...
even in the off season I still run an easy 10 to 12 miler as my short long run... an average road runner should be able to finish a half Mary with no problem. Faster of course means more work.
Since running is the most stressful of the three sports it's good not to hammer away at it all year...In fact your running will improve with regular down time. Your joints will love for it when your 50!
