When I lived in Santa Cruz and San Francisco in the early to mid 90s, I had friends that went and did Escape From Alcatraz. I don't remember them having to do anything special besides "sign-up".

I am now doing triathlons and would love to do that one. Looking at their website, they are not clear about how to register or when registration will open for 2007. It seems that the only way to get in is to be a corporate client of the sponsor, or to win your division in one of very few races around the world.

Is there ever an open registration for the general public?

You need to qualify for the event. There are numerous qualifiers all over the country. I'm thinking of trying for a slot, but the thought of that crazy cold water really gets to me. I think I would need a DRY suit for the swim!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

This is from the FAQ at http://www.tricalifornia.com/alcatraz/2006/index.htm: It looks like there is/was a random drawing in addition to the qualifiers.

Q--How can I become a participant in the Accenture Escape from Alcatraz event?

A--There are several possible ways to earn an application in order to register for the next Accenture Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
1) Qualify in an Escape TO Alcatraz Triathlon race which are posted on our website,
2) Random Drawing registration which opens on November 15th,
3) Entrance and completion of the 3 day Accenture Escape from Alcatraz Ultimate Performance Camp
4) Division champions from previous year's Accenture Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

^Thanks.

I'll try to remember that Nov 15 date and keep my fingers crossed.

It also appears like there are currently very few entries into the "Escape to the Bermuda" tri, so far. If that holds up, and you're a decent age-grouper, you could qualify through that event. Not a bad vacation either.

Erm, I thought you had to kill someone or commit armed robbery or something like that.

I got picked in the drawing, and I know that I really wanted to do this race 3 months ago when I submitted the entry, but now facing holiday travel expenses I'm debating about the $300.
