I stumbled across a web site with instructions on how to make your own disks for your wheels at recumbents.com. (Was Googling Disk Wheels) It was interesting to see how to make the discs out of fiberglass or ABS plastic. Although a little cumbersome, the process doesn't seem to be too complicated.

Has anyone tried this before? How did it work out? Would you or even could you use them in a race? I thought it would be cool to try and make my own and then paint them with some funky design. Maybee a skull and crossbones.:) (Maybee I should get a life?) I would definately be cheaper than a set of Zips.

Whoa...that's a process and a half. I just don't have that much dedication to DIY. If you get a good set of molds, you could start selling them!

$80 buys you a disc cover from Wheelbuilder.com
I dont have one yet, but plan to by next season. The word is that they work VERY well. You measure your rim depth and the dude customs cuts it for you. I would go this route over spending the $$ and time on messing...errr... making up... my own.

Way to labor intensive for me! Looks sort of Fred Flintstoneish and anyway DIY for me means "Doink It up Yourself."
Know a gut with disc covers...he swears by 'em.

Ya, I too went to Rich's site but it looks like he doesn't sell them anymore.

Theyve gotten hard to find on the site- you have to scroll down on the main page:

Yeah, the consensus out there is that these things rock. Pay the extra to have them trm it for ya, cause I've seen some of the hack jobs people have done to them trimming it themselves.

I think I might do this before the full iron I have in April just cause every one says it makes so much of a difference.
