Hey, im on a roll this week with ANOTHER THREAD!
Winter is coming soon and for all of those who live in the upper states and in Canada, you know how great that is for bike training!
Anyway, so im thinking either go to the gym..but why pay for the gym if ill only use it for one thing? In the long run, it'll be cheaper..so i might as well get a bike.

So any brands out there?
Any specific bikes you guys recommend?
Thanks

I assume you already have a bike to ride in the summer months. You need a computrainer. We are gearing up for our 3rd winter ironman 2007 new zealand. We live in the northeast and do all our training on it. We Love it.

why not just get a trainer and stick your bike on it--WAY cheaper. I have a cyclops and love it (as much as you can love a trainer).

well..i dont have bike :(
i dunno if u can call it a bike. Its my uncle's. Its basically a hunk of metal on wheels. My good bike is in germany and its going to be left there. It's a mountain bike too.
So until i have money to buy myself a *really* good bike, and seeing as ill be using a stationary bike more than bike due to winter, i thought id do that instead.
However i will look into the "cyclops", thanks.

A decent spin bike will cost the same as or more than a decent tri bike (cervelo dual, or a felt).

I'd rather just get a bike and a trainer.

A common stationary just doesn't feel like a bike.

A spinning bike is too expensive. Buy yourself a normal bike and put it on a trainer!

I got my trainer (Blackburn magnetic) on ebay for a great price. I pop in a movie or catch up on my recorded shows and go for a ride!!! I have an entry level Trek 1000. Nothing fancy or overly priced but it works for me right now. It's only my second year of tris.

I vote for Computrainer also ... although if you don't even have a good bike yet, splurging on a Computrainer obviously isn't the highest priority. Get a good bike and a decent trainer ASAP. I just hooked my Computrainer back up. It's already getting dark too early to get any sort of decent ride in after work. After almost getting in a BIIIG accident tonight when somebody didn't see me despite the 2 flashing lights and 1 HID I had on ... I think I'm going to skip the night rides in Chicago. Here's to some trainer time.

I use the low-end Tacx trainer and it works fine for me, blazindave.
You can get some cheap tires 'cos they do wear out and on a terainer you don't need high end rubber.

But now i have another problem :D Getting a bike.
What's a forward position? Also i have short legs. Does anyone know a bike (road not tri) which is built along for slightly longer torsos or shorter legs?

I use my bike on a cycleops trainer too.
Best best is to get a bike and trainer.
For both, go to a good LBS to get sized for the bike with the right fit.
If you want to get a spinning bike check e-bay.
A friend of mine got a Reebok spin bike that was used at a gym that was refurbished for $200, Sweet Deal!! :D

I'd recommend buying an inexpensive, used roadbike or use the hunk-O-junk that you mentioned having.

A trainer is a nice way to go. I'd also recommend a Kurt Kinetic, but then I'm partial.

Take a look at our site. Maybe you'll find something you like.

We carry just Kurt right now, but will be adding more options as time goes on.
