First, let me introduce myself. I am a newbie to the tri world. I have only been running for 9 months and swimming & biking for 4 months. I recently signed up to do an Ironman next year and the following week I experienced my first injury. I believe it is a case of Plantar Fasciitis. I continued to train for 6 weeks without the pain getting worse. However, since I stopped training 3 weeks ago, the pain has got much worse. Is this a sign of healing? How long can I expect to be down? It is driving me crazy. I have gone from 265lbs to 180lbs in less than a year and I'm scared the weight will return if I can workout. Thanks for any input.

i can't comment on the plantar fasciitis, but i would think you could still swim meanwhile to maintain the good work done so far

You really should stay off your feet as much as you can in an effort to help your feet recover. However, this is very difficult for people like us to do. I suffer from the same thing, in both of my feet. This will get better but if you continue to run without the proper support you will continue to hurt the facia.

If you haven't already gone to a pediatrist or orthopod, you should. I have orthodics now and that has made all the difference. I still hurt but not like I use too. I have stopped training for any marathons because the stress of running was just to great for my feet to take.

I haven't ever used a sleeping brace but it's another thing you could look into that might help. When you sleep and your feet are in a relaxed position, the facia begins to heal, then you stand up in the morning tearing the facia over and over again each day.

This will get better with proper care but you wont be able to continue running the distances you were running and expect it to get better. Bummer, I know..... Once your feet have completely recovered you can probably go back to the distances, slowly and with good arch support.

Go see a doc and good luck.

I've had alot of problems with plantar faciitis. Best thing for me was getting the Stradsbourgh Sock. Its basically a soccer sock that keeps your foot at 90degrees while you sleep so the tendon can't contract. Use that everynight and do exercises that don't involve running (you still got the swim, bike and some weights). Another thing is to roll golf balls with your feet while you sit at a desk. Its a great massage for the foot and keeps you occupied.
