IM Florida Peaking Question...

im am no ironman ... but i think in general you should have all your mega long stuff done about 3 weeks prior ... then leading up you would want to increase intensity but drop the workout durations. i would say the intensity increase should only be about 10-15% above race pace. i know the IM is a different beast than what I am used to but that is some of the logic I use when training for 1/2 IMs.

With Ironman Florida just a bit over two months out (~9weeks) I'm beginning to plan my peak phase of training, where I plan to "disappear" for about three weeks so I can get in my long distance and higher intensity workouts. I plan to start doing this in mid-September and end within the first or second week of October to ensure proper recovery and tapering time. Now my question is: I keep putting enormous amounts of pressure on myself to spend as much time on the saddle and in my running shoes and I am fairly confident in both parts. During my "peak" time I would like to get in at least one more 100+ ride along with a few longer runs with medium distance built in. On average I swim 3x a week for 3500-4000yds per workout. One of my friends invited me to participate at an open water race a few hours away at the beach. Mentally I know it would be beneficial to race this 1.71mi swim but would it detract from my long rides and runs? I get in about 175-200+miles a week on the bike and average about 30-35miles a week on the run. I think it's pretty obvious that I should do the race for a confidence booster but 112miles seems alot more daunting to me than 2.4. I just need some advice. Thanks!
