ready to move up to olympic distance but why so expensive?
depends a lot on the series and area you pick... but it means more road to have blocked off or patrolled (ie need of police for more space and/or longer) and more supplies and better support. Also because they *can* charge it. If Mdot can charge ~$500... and still sell out in 90 minutes a year in advance... then the power right now is with the companies. However, if you look around you can sometimes find cheaper ones, or ones that let you volunteer at other races and earn race credit.
I just signed up for the Vancouver Triathlon this morning, at a staggering $100. That included a pre-race dinner though which apparently you can't opt out of.
Otherwise the races are usually around $70, give or take and Half IM is around $200 here in B.C. in general.
It's not a cheap sport unfortunately. It's funny that I can run a marathon for $70 though, and they have to feed me more and close off a hell of a lot more of the city to accomodate us...:(

I can't answer on behalf of the race directors out there, but I can't imagine any of them are getting rich off of putting on races. My guess for the cost increases would be due to increasing liability insurance costs, permits and insurance riders required by whatever local and/or federal government entities they have to appease to hold a race, promotional costs, etc.
I worked with the U.S. Olympic Committee during the '96 Olympics as a local rep to coordinate the torch run through Las Vegas. The number of entities that had to be appeased (federal, state, city and county) were a friggin' nightmare. We had a heck of a time pulling this together...and this was for the Olympic Torch Relay, not a "lowly" triathalon.
Naturally, I wish the costs were lower too. However, I'm sure there are lots of factors of which we are not aware.

Sheeeesh!!!!! Now, that is a great quote, christri25. I also was wondering why it costs so much to register for a race but I guess the $$$ goes to pay for police, medical, T-shirts, food, drink, etc. The bigger the race, the more $$$.
$500.00 for an Iron Man? Goodness!!!! I payed $435.00 for Wisconsin last year. You should have seen my husband's face when I told him. It kind of looked like this  LOL. I recall him saying: "And you have to pay all that money to go and suffer all day?" I said: "Suffer? nahhh, it is fun...;) " Right?

Finished my third sprint tri for this year (my second year racing). Thought it would be my last but I am not ready to end my season yet. As my results have improved dramatically through all 3 races I am definitely ready to go to the next level. My biggest concern is the cost. Why does the registration cost practically double when the distance doubles?? That is almost a deterent to me moving up to that level.
