Hi folks,

Me again. Newbie swimmer (started mid-June), with previously no swiming background, recent T/I devotee, and slowly plodding along.

My weekly swim workout is now two 1000m workouts, and one longer 1300-1500m workouts on the weekend.

My Goal (if that helps) is to complete a 750m O/W swim (Sprint), and down the road a 1500m 0/W swim (Oly). (Note: I know I'll have to practice O/W swimming too, which is exactly what I'm going to do this weekend, but this question has to do with Pool training).

Currently, for my 1000m days I'm doing:

20 x 25m (warm up)
5 x 50m
10 x 25m (warm down)

Naturally, I'm trying to increase the number of 50m reps, before moving on to 75m/100m/etc. Is that the correct way to go about it?

Right now, a 50m rep is pretty taxing, and I need about 30-40 seconds rest before another 50m rep.

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance!

It sounds like you are working too hard doing your 1000m. swim about 300m w/u then your 50s and 200 w/d. instead of 5X50 do 3 or 5 sets of 25 x 5 on 30 sec after each set of 5, 25s rest 30 sec then repeat the next set of 25s rest 30 and do another set of 25s these should be swum at over 75% not over 90% speed. You can move up later to 3 sets of 5 x 50 with 20sec rest afer each 50 and 40 sec rest between each set of 5, 50s.

Hi George, hanks for the training suggestion! I so appreciate it, you don't even know.

Just to make clear, what I was doing before was:

25m x 20 (warmup), with 5-10 sec rest at end of each 25m swim
50m x 5, with 30-40 seconds rest at end of @ 50m swim
25m x 10 (warmdown), with 10-15 sec rest at end of each 25m swim

What you're recommending is:

300m (warmup), any distance/rest combination?
25m x 5, with 30 seconds after set of 5
25m x 5, with 30 seconds after set of 5
25m x 5, with 30 seconds after set of 5
25m x 5, with 30 seconds after set of 5
200m (warmdown), any distance/rest combination?

During the sets of 5 x 25m, do I get a short rest between 25m swims too? Cause I'm not sure I can go 125m at a time yet.

I'm so newbie I don't know if I'm even conveying my swim sets/reps properly! So, thanks again, for taking the time to clarify things for this newbie knucklehead.

Rest between each 25, swim 1 unit, rest 1 unit eg if you swim 25 in 17 sec rest 17 sec, then rest 30 sec between each set of 5.

A warm up can be any combination of swim, kick, arms only (pull) a warm down is a very sloppy relaxed swim. I am starting to do my warm ups at 1000m and warm downs 1000m.
