First Tri Behind Me

Finally, after 6 straight weeks of preparing everyday, I completed my first tri. 500 yard swim, 11 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile run. I had no time goal. Finished in 1:15 minutes unofficially. No idea if that is a good or bad. They didn't keep track of splits and I didn't have a watch so I have no clue how I performed on each leg.

The Swim:
Complete disaster in my book. Felt like I was tired after a few moments. Started swiming side stroke, on my back, free style and breast stroke. Anything to get me to land! The water was 83 degrees. Big difference though with no wetsuit or salt. I was in shock how I kept getting kicked and pulled. Very unrelaxed.

The Bike:
Good on the bike, the only BIG issue is that I completely bite on getting a drink and biking at the same time. Started swerving. Eventually pulled over and just took a swig and started again. Rest of the ride was comfortable and fun.

The Run:
This was my best part. Probably passed like 50 people. Not once did I have to walk. It was a field run and I actually tripped and fell over a rock, but I got up and kept on going strong. Nothing like a few war injuries.

Overall Diagnosis:
Swim felt like a total disaster. Man, I can't imagine doing the .9 mile for the Olympic version. But maybe a wetsuit will really help. I tried to remain calm. I am going to have to practice distance more. My swimming aerobic capacity is poor.

It was a fun day and it felt great to finish. Learned a lot and it was definitely fun. I need to learn to love the swim instead of dreading it.

Cheers

Out of curiosity, which tri did you do?

Hansen Dam. Northern part of LA County. Pretty well organized for the 2nd annual. But I would have liked to know my splits. Didn't bring any timing devices because I assumed it would all be tracked.

Oh well.

Congrats on your race.
Can relate to the swim. I (still) tend to go out too hard and go into a bit of O2 debt. Takes practice maintaining control and going easy until get into a groove.
On the bike, if you have areobars then use an areo waterbottle.
Glad you overall enjoyed the day!
What race is next!

LA Triathloon. Olympic version. Still concerned about the swim, but I figure the wetsuit would help. September 10th. Not far away.

I do have aerobars! Will make good use of it...but I should be capable of reaching for water and not swerving over like Mel Gibson at 2am in the morning! I couldn't put the water back and I had to take a break and stop. What a waste of time.

Thanks. Race results haven't been posted yet. And I didn't have a real time goal.

But thinking about it...I would have wanted swim in 20 minutes, bike in 40 minutes and run in 25 minutes and 5 minutes for transition.

Wednesday brick days have helped me a lot. Totally prepared for the bike to run.

Still a little bit of shock over the swim.

Cheers

The swim is tough... good job with it all though!

I find that most smaller local tris don't have timing for each section, and as a result a watch is good if you want splits.

And as RV mentioned, aerobottles are AWESOME!
