pools, kids , frustration

So, I want to vent. I am sick and tired of the pools in my area. I swim at 2 pools. I pay to swim at these pools. I pay 80$ a month. JUST TO SWIM. So, I just have to say that the YMCA in IRMO and the Harbison recreation center do not value my time. They do not value my money. They don't respect me in general.

Why is that when summer rolls around I am unable to swim with out being interrupted. From having to move for swim lessons, to having limited lanes available because KIDS have their swim lessons. Swims teams have priority and HOG numerous lanes. KIDS wandering into lap lanes. I am over it. These KIDS have off all day but yet they hog the pool before work and after work. The parents think they own the pool. Its so frustrating, Do they think I am some type of swim for fun type of guy ? No, I have a schedule I have things to do like everyone else. So, When I get to the Y to swim at 5 and I have to wait till 6:30 for a LANE because the pool is over run by KIDS , I have to be inconvenienced when there is ALWAYS supposed to be an available lane. Today in the middle of some intervals the Swim Lesson Coach for some 5 year olds was yelling at me to get out of the lane. Geez. I am 30 and getting yelled at to get out of the lane ? That is unacceptable. Is it so hard to wait 3 minutes ? I am glad I don't have kids.

Today I had another nice talk with the swim director. I cancelled my membership at the YMCA.

Sorry that's happened, if you had kept your Y membership I would have suggested practice for an open water swim and just swim over the runt, then instead of giving up your membership it might have been revoked.

Yeah, that sucks. I pay $25 per month for LA Fitness and use there pools 3x per week. I go on off times, usually like 7:30am after I've already been at work for 2 hours. Sometimes there are people in the lanes, but I just hop in and start cranking and they usually bail. Lane through intimidation is my startgey. Works every time. :)

thats they best way to do it leave work at 10am or 3pm and you avoid everyone.

Kids and old people really PISS me off. They act like they own all the lanes. Even the lanes reserved for faster swimmers. My way of dealing with this kind of people is just to hop in the water and go about myself. Eventually they'll either decide to get in another lane or start cussin' at me.
This one time a granny was breaststroking in the fast lane like a wounded turtle and was starting to get annoyed by me. I ignored her and just followed a straight line. She would swim in the middle of the lane, making herself as broad as possible and trying to kick me as I swam by. After 3 or 4 times slapping her as I passed she decided it would be best for the both of us to bail lane and join the other 'floaters'.

you could always enroll at USC and use the Blatt pool, or the Strom pool! Much better scenery, never busy :).

Really though, to use Strom, you HAVE to be a student. Blatt (the old PE center) may be flexible, or you may be able to pay... worth calling about at least.

Check out USC's pool. I swim at the Citadel pool and its NEVER busy. They have funky hours during the summer, but I work around it. Plus, its only $50 a semester.

I hear you, man. Same thing happened to me this summer. I went to the YMCA (with the BEST olympic pool in the area) and swam at 7:00AM... the master's group was just finishing, and the local kids' swim team was just getting started....they take up 4 of 6 lanes for 2 hours. After my 3-person-per-lane-swim, I went to spin class for an hour....and when I went back into the locker room, there were probably 40 yelling, giggling, primping elementary and middle school girls in there! Apparently the Y had a summer camp and they overtake the pool around 9:00AM. I thought I was going to lose my mind as I got ready for work! It was the worst morning...I vowed to not go back til the kiddies were back in school. And that seriously, was the kicker I needed to get my husband to take me on vacation  Hang in there...our kiddies are already back in school, thank God!

i hear what you saying. and i agree with the others who have suggested a university pool. The pools at UNC are almost never filled up and kids are never a problem.

That's what happens when you stop training and have nothing else to do...

I feel a bit lucky here as the local pool has lanes for swimming and the lifeguards usher people out who are not actively doing laps.

That being said I recently joined Lifetime Fitness for a 24/7 lap pool (six dedicated lanes only for laps plus 3 other lanes in another pool). If you have one of these near you I encourage you to check them out.

Where are the parents? The pool I go to has lap swim area and then a seperate kids pool. Guess I'm lucky because I have my kids go play on the water slide while I do laps. They have asked to swim laps with me but just a simple- no, this is for training- has worked . Most annoying thing so far is the kayak club that comes in, moves all the lane bouys and fills the pool with kayaks. But I guess grown ups can be inconsiderate also :)

Chris..try the Univ. They may even have a rate for "townies" to use the facilities.
I use a University pool too, 4 designated lap lanes,I rarely share and everyone gets along...INCLUDING THE OLD PEOPLE...some of whom are capable of kicking my a$$...
I also have a pool close by that charges $5 a crack it has TWO pools..25m and 25 yds.

My summer pool has this rather..large... older lady that doggy paddles in one of the lap lanes for like 45 minutes. She's large enough to have plenty of flotation and barely moves her legs or arms. I can swim 100 yards before she does one length.

Then there is the middle aged triathelete who ignores the pool schedule and tries to stay in the pool when it closes to the public and the master swimmers take over. He had the balls to hit me in the middle of a lap one time. Luckily one of the swimmers on the team is also a high ranking cop and let that be known when the dick started mouthing off ( from the other side of the pool, of course!)

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I live in rural area whos only pools are the high school pools. I work in one town and live in the other. The town I work in has a great pool with dedicated hours for lap swimmers, but currently is closed as it is being remodled. The town I live has a pool with very limited hours, like 6:30-7:30am m-f, 2-5m-f, 6-8pm t&th. On top of the crappy hours, they only have two lanes open, so the kids can jump into the deep end. and this summer they have farmed out to our federal law enforement training center, so they have been closed almost 50% of the time.

Our pool was more of the same over the summer. At our Y, we have two pools - indoor & outdoor. The indoor is used by the camps so you'd think there wouldn't be too many kids outside. We had only one lane open, which we had to beg to keep open all day. Everyday, it was getting jumped on or getting hit with noodles, splash balls, whatever. Never once did the "lifeguards" correct the kids about the lap lane. I woiuld also bring my kids with me and my 2 oldest (both teens) would swim laps with me. The lifeguards would make them get out of the pool if there was an "adult swim" even thought they were in the middle of a set - because they're not "adults". I don't get it. Well, school started today, and the Y was only opening the outdoor pool at night - ugh!!!! After a lot of pleading and a very cooperative life guard in charge, we conviced them to open at 2. They just didn't get it that some people actually go to a pool to excercise!!!

I use those swims as practice for the open water on race day. With that mentality I have no problems plowing into people.:D

I have the same frustrations-- no matter what pool, it is the same thing. The best bet for me has been a masters team. Thankfully we are putting in my endless pool this fall and I should be set!

I had the same problem this past weekend. I get two of my 3 swims in the at 5 AM during the week...no issues. Everyone in the pool at that time of the morning has a purpose. But this past Sunday afternoon, I ran into two people. Both middle aged men who apparently didn't have a clue (or to have worked out in quite some time). They seemed baffled that I was so pissed off at running into them. After that I decided if I found anyone else in my lane it'd be time to practice an open water swim start, but no one else wanted to play. Hopefully my complaining to the guy at the desk (I swim at a Bally's if anyone's wondering) will have some impact. Somehow I doubt any of these folks would jump on a weight machine someone else is using without asking, but apparently, in their minds, swimming is different.
