What ever happened to giving to a charity and being humble about it? Yes it is great that he is doing it to help find a cure for cancer.
"I'll raise money AND you can think I'm great at the same time."
I'm with Chris on this..too much time...too much money...too much Ego.
Hell, I'd do it for fun and keep my mouth shut about it.
Part of our current "Look at me while I blog my life" culture.
Helping is great...I have a problem with the shameless self promotion...sort of like the Dean K. "50 marathons in 50 days." thing.

Well just to refresh some memories....... I was the crazy dude dreaming about ALL IM´s in a 24 month period.
The reason is....I would love to do it........hell I would even love to compete in ALL IM´s no matter if it´s not in a 24 month period and takes much longer.
for now it´s only a dream, a wish.... that might or not come true.
Back to this guy......
I guess that IF the real reson is...."I have a lot of money I want to do something crazy and I want everybody to know what I did so........ let´s say I´ll do it for a good reason and I´ll have the excuse for advertising myself." If this was what crossed this guys head...then a big buuuuuuuuuuu for him. But well ........ in the end I hope the persons living with cancer in Canada actually get a benefit from this guys effort. which i have to say is not a piece of cake. A big aplause for him.
P.D: I edited my post afeter reading Tribro´s and noticing I didn´t explain myself.
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
Wow you guys are pretty neg. Don't get where it says he's got too much money and time on his hands. He's doing something he wants to do and trying to raise money in that effort. Not sure having a nice website to help build awareness of his cause and ask for donations is "not being humble". If it inspires others to do the same and brings some additional awareness to the problem then it's good.
Maybe I missed something?
No,tribro, you didn't miss anything...I for one was making alot of assumptions while hopped up on too much Twinnings English Breakfast Tea.
In my neighborhood, it would take alot of bread to do 6 IM's in 60 days, money I don't have.
And yes it is all for good.
I just hope that anyone who raises money for charity through these sorts of things is doing it for the right reason, and since we can't get inside his head..we'll never know.
Mea Culpa.

It just annoys me sometimes at how people use the sport. Of course one would say that it brings attention to the sport. So you have some PRO's doing the race and this guy gets more media attention maybe. Especially if NBC is broadcasting the race. Less exposure for the Pro's who do it for a living.

But is that part of this guy's agenda - to get lots of media and television attention? Maybe, hard to tell. I don't think he's trying to exploit triathlons or take away from the pros though, even if that is a result. If you're raising money for a cause, you have to advertise...
I pity da fool!
having just done Team in Training this spring, i can say it ain't easy to get people to part with their hard earned money, even for good causes...but you can't blame them. you just have to advertise to enough people so that you can accomplish your fundraising.
6 Ironmans in 6 countries over 60 days is very impressive…but I am totally amazed by Dean Karnazes who is going to run 50 Marathons in 50 States in 50 Consecutive days…Now that’s extreme endurance. I can’t even comprehend this feat.

Tribro - he's doing IMC. maybe you could do an interview with him. see what his motivation is.
Chris - maybe he has a family member or friend who has breast cancer and is doing something major to get more people to donate. I'd rather do 6 IM's than get chemo... just a thought.

Dean Karnazes needs to get drug tested. He already passed the 'full of myself' test with flying colors.
This is the kind of athlete I'm talking about...No self promotion here:

Sorry guys, I'm w Tribro on this one. He has a cause and a mission, more power to him as far as I see it. Heck it's for a great cause. I see nothing wrong with it. He has, I am sure, marketed the thing himself and seems to be doing ok. As far as I see it, it's FAR better than letting some stupid actor do an IM cause they are popular (just my opinion).
How he gets the $ FOR the IMs I am unsure though, hmmmm. Your right Anton, he must have a large purse cause he says:
"100% of your donation will go directly to the Canadian Cancer Society thanks to our sponsors"
He needs the publicity, that's the only way to get the $ from people nowadays. And BTW I gave some coin to him :) Hope he makes it!

Stop giving this poor guy crap. He is giving all the money he makes to charity from the advertisements. Can anyone here do 6 IM's in 60days? I know I can't I am shooting for IM Arizona in the spring.
Maybe I missed something (it does happen from time to time :) ) what did Dean do for every one to think he is an @55?
I think the big problem folks have with DK is the self-promotion.
Going on Leno awhile back and saying he was going to be the first person to run 300 miles non-stop. Pam Reed beat him to it.
He claims to be such a great ultra runner but there are others who have done far more significant feats that you never hear of..Yiannis Kuoros for example. Few people know who Pam Reed is.
Maybe some of it is sour grapes but I think alot has to do with the pre-bragging.
And yes...I could do 6 IM's in 60 days..if I had that kind of money. If you are doing them just to finish, they really aren't that hard.(tongue in cheek)

Oh...I forgot someone..David Horton...heard of him?
David has run the Appalachian Trail (2,144 Miles) in 52 days.
He followed that up by running the Pacific Crest Trail (2,666 miles) in 66 days, yet, few people have heard of him. However, because of his self promotion Many people think DK is some ultrarunning god.
DK will run 50 marathons in 50 days that's...1,310 miles way short of Davids records.

If he does this and raises alot of money for charity and does alot of good, kudos to him.
If he uses this for some shameless self promotion and becomes a media whore that would suck.
I hope for the best.
I want to see how that plays out.
Then I will form a more accurate opinion

Christ I have never heard of this guy thats just nuts. I couldn't imagine doing that.
Yeras ago as I laid in a snow filled hammock at the top of the 10th pitch of the Dihedral Wall on El Cap during a solo attempt...It hit me like a fist in the face.
"There is a thin line between being hard, and being stupid."
I threw off the haul bag tied the ropes together and rapped off in the snow and sleet...to live another day.
David isn't nuts and he is not stupid. He is hard. But like many great, unknown athletes, he is hard without the macho that many people associate with being hard. The quiet Hardman.
Being a Hardman or Hardwoman is more about the mind than the body. Some people in their minds, truly, have no limits.

Hey everyone. I am new here but I was in France when I met Mike. He is a nice guy and not some ego crazed individual. There are a lot of people on here that say he has too much time...too much money...do you know him? Have you raced alongside him? Probably not. He didn't strike me as a wild and crazy guy. Just a down to earth fellow triathlete there to do a job. Quite friendly and if he is doing it for a good cause...good for him. There are so many of us to talk about doing this or doing that to make a difference...this guy actually went out and did it and that is more than a lot of people.
I have told friends about this guy and they see him as not some over glorified athlete but as hope. I work with several cancer groups here in the bay area and those going through it right now are happy to know someone is out there making a difference.
Self promotion...whatever...my hat goes off to the man since it is something I know probably 99.9% of us surely couldn't do. At least he is doing something not sitting at a computer running our mouth.
He loves tris and is good at it. To do what he has accomplished takes a lot of training, knowledge and love to the sport. My respect for the guy.
He may be a good sport but doesn’t have the correct approach when raising money. I am not an expert in marketing but according to his website, I just checked it, he has just collect below 3k a 27% of his goal and his last race is Sunday. I raised more money when I participated in the Treasure Island Triathlon with TNT in 60 days.
And, I don’t think he will attempt to do it again because he lost money, even if he happens to be rich, his fundraising results were very poor, and he is going to pay a big toll in the recovery phase. I don’t think, after this, he would even consider triathlons any more.
Therefore, I agree that he is a show off kind a guy. Look at me 6. 6, 60. but the main goal was not accomplished!
Well Said! Honestly.
And as for sitting at computers running our mouths...
I know many of us here who support wonderful causes...given more than you can imagine...quietly and anonymously.

I agree with you.
I am at my computer running my fingers actually,
and I am doing that when I have free moments at work.
I cannot afford not to work and just train.
I work to pay my bills and support my kids.
I trained on the time I wasn't working or spending time with my kids.
I did one Ironman and I raised money for that.
I wish I had some bucks, the things I could do.:D

Whoever said multiple Ironmans in a year was hard!
Check this guy out. Given his feat his times are awesome.
