Testing the waters
I just did my first sprint this season after racing duathlons last year and there are three pieces of advice that most on this site will give when asked those very questions:
1. Check out some of the tri books available. My personal recommendation is Joe Friel's Training Bible.
2. Take swim lessons. No amount of training did as much to soothe my nerves about the swim as working on form with a coach for a few hours. I plan on taking more this winter.
3. Hang out on Trifuel. Welcome to a whole community of experienced, friendly athletes.
jamieM is right on. i can't give you advice specifically on training for a halfIM, but I can give you a general roadmap of what has worked for me. first off, check out Total Immersion, a program on DVD (and live, if you have the $$) to develop your swimming form, with excellent tutorials on basic principles of swimming, techniques to improve your balance in the water, etc. once you've refined your stroke you will want to spend at least 3 - 4/days/week in the pool, or however much time you need to build confidence and 'feel' for the water. there was a point in the early development of my stroke where it all came together and i finally felt like a swimmer, not a runner trying not to sink. i think that only came through repetition and consistency. you will then want to build your base. hope that helps.

Hello,
I am a newbie to the world of trialthalons, and am looking for some guidance on ways to traing and training guides.
I have already set a goal to compete in a Half ironman next June.
I have been cycling for the past year now, so that is not a concern I have also completed a few marathons. My Concern is the swim.
I guess I am just looking for some basic trainning plans that I can use as a base to get started with. Thanks.
