I have increased my run training by a significant amount and now I'm paying for it. Does anyone have any good remedies for shin splints beyond just icing it and taking ibuprofen?

Rest. Lots of it. Substitute running with elliptical and aqua running. Do this till your legs feel better, than do it another 4 weeks. You need to give your legs plenty of time to rest and recover otherwise you're gonna blow the rest of your season.

Last time I was in the local running shop, they had these compression straps made specifically for shin splints. They said the feed back from customers using them was very positive.

Good luck.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

Depending on the severity take at least a few days off. Look at your shoes - are they toast? Are they they the right shoe for your feet? If so look at some Dr. Scholl heel implants or insoles for your shoes. Try the heel only implants first and see if it subsides. Stay on flat courses, slow down and decrease your mileage (at least in the short run - no pun intended). Shorten your stride as well if you tend to land on your heels.

Substitute some pool time for running in the mean time and use fins to help stretch your ankle and shins.

If they still bother you after giving them a break, give them another. If still a problem see a dr/physio.
