70 ways to keep your cool (and smash your competition)
In hot weather I always grab one for drink and one to splash. On hot rides, where I don't have a domestique, I won't waste the splash. In Races with a bottle hand up...sure.
Last Saturday night, at a local 8k I splashed 6 cups (90 degrees,90% humidity.) Once, years ago, I went for two cups...one of Gatorade and one of water...got em mixed up. Sticky.

Yeah…I almost poured Gatorade over my head at an aid-station in the last race I did. That could be bad here in AZ, you would have bees following you around….hmmmm….maybe a good way to increase my run times.

Speaking of cooling. I have seen personal misting devices made by various companies like on mistymate.com - basically bike bottles with a built-in hand pump that allows you to pressurize the bottle feeding to a narrow hose and a nozzle to disperse water in a fine mist. I would think these would be helpful on the bike (or even the run?) on very hot dry days...
It would also look kinda cool as you whizz by leaving behind what looks like a trail of smoke...
During the run I always pour at least one at each station, whether or not I drink.
If you wish to be out front, then act as if you were behind.
Dude, I ran for an hour and half this afternoon and went through 4 bottles of Gatorade on my fuel belt and then topped them off at a water fountain and poured 3 of those over my head. It had to be 110 with humidity over here in Fountain Hills. Come on, bro', we know how to manage heat better than anyone! We live in the Valley of Death!

Yeah Floyd poured tons of water(bottles).
Problem is, if you start, you have to keep doining that the entire race.
Last race I did it was close to 90 degrees F.
I missed out on the water in the aid station during the 21,1k run, had a Gatorade bottle though, so I poured.
Gatorade + the scrape on my back ( from the zipper) = STINGING PAIN ALL THE WAY TO THE FINISH LINE.

On a marathon with sponge stations I always pop a wet sponge under my baseball cap - keeps you cool for ages ! If no sponges just wet the cap down

Dude,
You think that is the only reason? :D
I did the NYC Tri last week and it was in the 90's and about 85% humidity. I would go thru the aide station and dump 5-6 cup up water on me, I ran thru a firehose they had spraying, and I was even tempted to jump in a pool in Central park that was just a few meters of the run course.
My running shoes felt like sponges. You could hear them squish as I ran!!

It was reported that Landis poured 70 bottles of water over his head yesterday to keep his core temperature down and destroy everyone else in Stage 17 of the TdF.
Now I regularly pour water over my head and I have seen everyone from newbies to top age-groupers to pros do this at various races…BUT 70 BOTTLES?!?!
Maybe I need to up the amount of water that I am dumping on my head. So how about everyone else out there? How much water do you normally pour on yourself during hot training or racing?
