Dilemma (silly question): what to wear

First race of the year is on Sat. (this will be my third sprint distance race overall --did 2 last yr.). Last wear I wore zoot tri shorts for the swim and then put on a zoot tri top for the bike run.

It was okay except --lost time in T1 putting on the tri tank and on the run the tank kinda "rode up" on me, which didnt feel all that great.

So, I bought a tyr tri suit.

I have worn it to bike --it is comfortable.

But (and here is where I broke the cardinal rule), I have not worn it pre-race to swim or to run.

So, now you know the dilemma. Anybody make the switch from shorts and top to the tri suit.

Pros of the switch: save time in T1 and no riding up by the top
Cons of the switch: I'm breaking the cardinal rule about trying new things on race day.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!:)

Probably be okay for a Sprint distance. Tho, it is ALWAYS best to test it first. Other option is to wear the shirt and tri-shorts on the swim. That way no change time in T1.

i have used both--tri suit and tri shorts with top. but i recommend you wear them on your training to get used to them. that's what i do now. and i wore the shorts and top for several races but experienced the same issue, riding up. annoying. but i swam with the top so i didn't have to deal with putting it on in the transition. i now prefer the tri suit for sprints because you don't have to fuss with it riding up and it feels alot more aero in the water. however, when it gets hot later this summer i may go back to the shorts and top because the suit can get warm on the run. hope this helps.

silly question from me...how does a shirt ride up?
does it have to do with being a tight fit?

In my experience, they don't "ride up", they roll up.

Getting out of the water you're obviously wet, and the tight top binds to your body as you try to pull it down. It ends up rolling upon itself, and there you are looking around to see if anyone can help you pull it down. I've worn a trisuit the last 2 seasons and don't have to deal with it.

I bet you won´t have any kind of trouble!

The first time I used my tri suit (DeSoto) was on my first race.
I have never used it in training only in races and it´s always great.

For me....since I use a Polar S720i I never consider not wearing a full suit for competitions since in training my heart rate monitor band generally gets out of place because of water drag. With the full suit I don´t get this problem in races. I love it.

Well...wear the suit. Don't worry about it...you should be fine..it is only a sprint after all.
If it causes problems...you'll know to never do THAT again.:)
Good luck.

You are only doing a sprint, no matter what happens you wont be in it long enough to worry about it :)

I really appreciate it. I am going to go with the tri suit. I bought the darn thing so I might as well use it. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

Hey, wore the TYR trisuit for my race --worked great. Only problem: when you have to go to the bathroom, it's a little more complicated. But all in all it worked great. Really liked it for all three legs --no complaints. I guess the only thing that bugged me was my heart rate monitor strap slipped a bit and would sometimes not register my HR --so I would have to readjust --just a little more difficult with the tri suit, but I managed.

I'll post a race report on my sprint after the race director posts the results on line.

Thanks again for the advice.

What a great board and great posters!:)
