Carbon Wheels and Brake Noise

Hey Yall,

I own a set of HED 3C's, carbon wheels, tubulars, and I'm using set s of KoolStop Carbon Fiber Pads, only with these wheels.

I have about 125 miles on the brakepads. I've been racing this season with these wheels and brakepads, but this weekend, got the wheels and brakes installed, took a test ride, everything was just fine.

Race day the temps were in the 90's, and I thought I was going deaf the first time I hit the brakes... They shrieked, howled, and made all kinds of noises! I didn't stop to look, but it was happening both front and rear. Finished up the 40K, and had pretty well used half the brakepads up.

Anybody else have this type of problems with High Temps and Carbon wheels? And yes, I know I had the right brake pads on, since the standard pads would have been gone, as much braking as the course demanded.

My guy at the LBS told me to watch them carefully during the summer cause they would not last as long. I guess the heat affects them some way. I race in mostly 90 degree temps and have changed my pads twice already since April.

I took my bike into the LBS yesterday, and talked with one of the Elite Riders there. And here's the scoop...

The Zipp and KoolStop pads are tapered, so that the tail of the pad hit first, this keeps the chatter down. As the pad wears, the tail gets shaved off first, and then you're back to a flat pad, which makes noise on carbon.

On the hot day, and the steep hills (with off-camber turns), meant lots of braking. And yes, the tails were gone.

He suggested filing a little of the front of the pad off, buy new ones, or just put up with the noise.

depending on the calipers you have, can't you adjust the pads so they "toe out" ??

What tri did you do...I did buckeye lake...and used the same pads and had a similar problem...but it didn't last too long. I thought maybe you did buckeye lake cause your are in Ohio and that course had a lot of bends and turns.
