I just got this new baby and love her. http://bluebirdbiker.trifuel.net/2006/07/14/we-have-a-new-addition-to-the-family/ The simplicity of it is great and it is totally a different ride. Works the legs in a diff. manner and feels like a different workout. Highly recommended that you all try one. Here are some good benefits identified by Friel and others for riding one.

Anyone else have one? What do you think?

Cool. Haven't been on a fixed gear too much yet, though I have an old road bike I'm going to convert soon.

The closest I come right now is the singlespeed mountain bike I built up last winter.

My boyfriend commutes on a fixie. He absolutely loves it. Since riding the fixed gear, he's a much stronger rider in general. It's amazing how much it's improved his strength both on the flats and in the hills.
He loves it too because it's so easy to maintenance - basically maintenance free except for cleaning and lubing the chain occasionally.
Have fun with it! I've been considering switching my commuter road bike to a fixie. Haven't gotten up the nerve to do it yet (I have some hills on my commute).....

Ya, I gotta agree it does make for a better cadence. If ya get a managable gear ratio, I run 46/18, then hills are not that bad. I had the best time into work this morning on the fixie!! And last night I rode the regular bike after like 3 days and what a weird feeling hehe. It did seem to be a smoother cadence, but too early to tell. I recommend it to anyone that is considering. It's a much "purer" ride? You seem to have more control.
