tour discussion, post 11th stage finish
Not a surprise to see Landis at the top - even with that hip. Nice to see Levi have a good day ... finally. And DSC is really disappointing - can't see that this is a part of a master plan. Hopefully Landis remains strong.

The most interesting part, for me, is to look at the Points race and KOM.

This really is a whole different tour. Seeing Discovery so far back in the team standings...and Hincapie fading makes you think "It WAS all about Lance."
I'm happy to see Floyd in Yellow and Mac in Green but I would like to see Ras back in Polka dots.
Jdav...I think there has been little discussion about the tour because everyone else was on the Lance wagon and with him gone, they really don't give a rats a$$ about cycling. Being able to say "Lance this,Lance that" made them SEEM like bikies and helped them fit in. They're just wannabes.

I'm just happy to see Levi come alive. Though he's still 5 or so minutes back, he can actually be in contention for the podium, at least for now. We'll see how relevant that statement is after the other TT. Glad to see that some of the post-doping big guns finally get or come closer to the jersey. As for disco, I think it's hard for them to place well in the more difficult stages when they aren't really working for anyone and compete with the everyman-for-himself mentality. Floyd is near untouchable, but I want Levi to do well!

I agree...i think the biggest problem for disco this year has been Johan refusing to name a leader. everyone on the team was used to riding for someone else which is quite different than riding for the podium. it takes a whole different mindset. i am just as shocked to see paolo struggle today as i am with George.
Now that discovery has no chance i guess i will turn to rooting for the USA...i would much rather see levi win it than Floyd but i think Floyd is the only american with a chance...

I totally agree MaverickUNC, Im pulling big time LEVI !!
I thought today was a super exciting stage
I think Discovery's problem is a lack of team effort, I think one of Lance's biggest strength's was always the powerful team backing him up and protecting him
I had the impression at first that Hincapie was going to be the man in charge...but I dont think the team is as devouted to him
Look at Gerolsteiner today, Levi had 2 other teammates helping him up until the last 10km or so
It would be nice to see DSC move up a touch, but like I said, im routing for levi
which reminds me...about the whole Lance bandwagon, anyone noticing a new bandwagon trend toward Landis...
I think its cause he had such a strong spring season, but he is the only rider ESPN talked about pre-tour, OLN gives Landis updates every 5 seconds
the other day I was out at for dinner and drinks with some friends and I saw a kid probably around 11 - 12 years old in full phonak gear, jersey and shorts and green socks....it was funnuy
its good to see that people are still having some interest in the tour in Landis now that Lance is gone, but Im getting tired of the Landis bandwagon, dont get me wrong though, Id be pleased if he finishes on the podium, so long as its behind leipheimer !!

I disagree. It's the opposite. I think the Disco boys aren't riding as well because they don't have a powerful leader imposing his will on them. I think Lance's domination of the race was both an inspiration to the rest of the team as well as a factor of intimidation. Plus they all knew their jobs and when to do them.
good point, I guess thats what I meant in a round-a-bout sorta way
hahaha
its virtually the same team as last year minus lance, the difference, is minus lance - the guy who kept the team together, DSC is still a great team, I didnt mean to say they werent, just disorganized, probably due to a over-all lack of leadership
hincapie is horse and could totally lead the team, but I think his personality is too timid
you make a good point, guess I hadnt really thought about the cause behind the weakness when I was writing that

A power vacume ...These guys are pros and are known to jump ship if someone offers them more money...like many people would if they got more money for the same job.
Lance used trickle down economics...if he won...he used some of his winnings to pay bonuses to his soldiers.
With no one winning and pulling down the big bucks, maybe there is no incentive. I just can't buy this "Lance is such a great guy I spread myself all over the alps for him" bit. We all know money is power.
Or MAYBE this is what this is all about..."PROVE you are the leader everyone says you are...then we'll follow."
Alot of the leaders are gone...new ones are coming up...but they have to earn it. No one is going to hand it to them.

i personally think that after tom danielson has a few more grand tours in his legs he will be the one to finally take the reins of this team and lead them back onto the podium...i just hope johan can continue to sustain the powerful team he has built, guys like chechu, jose, eki, george...they are getting old...

I'm happy to see Floyd in Yellow
Its interesting to see how poorly Team Discovery is doing without Lance. And just to further prove it really was all about Lance...I've been noticing that he is conveniently making the talk show rounds at this particular time of year. He was on Leno two or three nights ago and I also caught him doing an interview on ESPN yesterday. Its July, gotta get your Lance fix!
Personally, I'm routing for Floyd. The man is getting a total hip replacement later this year!! He may never come back to level that he is at now (though if he does, he'll be able to patent a logo and make beaucoup bucks off of it just like Lance!) Knowing the possible risk to his career, I thunk it took alot of courage for him to make the decision to have the surgery. I'd like to see him win just to be able to go now in one last blaze of glory.
I'm kind of sad that I read this thread! I started watching Stage 11 this morning, but then I had to go to class before I got to see the end. Now I know how its finished and it kind of ruined it! Oh well, OLN is showing it 2-3 times a day, so I'll catch the end later tonight. I hope it is exciting a finish as some of the other stages!

yeah, me2...was afraid to read this thread because I've been watching the recap when I get home from work...as for disco, im very surprised that they've been so weak...i figured hincappie would step up and show what he's worth...he's a big no show...same for popyvich...but he's a strong climber so perhaps he'll find his legs...salvodeli may be their only hope...as for the floyd and levi match, i don't know...i hope they both make the podium but there's alot of work to do in the mountains...so go USA...and remember, 'nobody likes the french'...yelled from a heckler of a french boxer at a boxing match at the olympics in sydney 2000 that i will never forget
Sorry guys, I tried to say in the heading that I was going to be talking about everything including today's stage, my mistake for not being clearer.
Another thing that stood out to me to day was the fact that Floyd didn't have any Phonak teamates helping him in the front, but rather it has been the T-Mobile team controlling the front of the peleton for most of the race.
Could the fact that Floyd was on the cover of Outdoor magazine be helping his band wagon? I can say that after reading the article, and reading Lance Armstrong's war around the same time, I became a fan just because of ththe floyd-lance feud. I know it sounds quirky, but that's what made me jump on his bandwagon. That and he's hardened. Given his background, he's not the type of person that'll crack under pressure. He's not a Sally, which makes him the ideal person to fill the shoes of Lance.
"The faster you run, the quicker you'll be done."
Floyd and Lance have a rivalry??? I didn't know about that (I'm kind of new to the cycling obsession). That makes me want to route for Floyd all the more. Don't get me wrong, Lance is a freakin' hoss and I tremedously respect what he's accomplished, not only for winning the Tour seven time and surviving cancer, but also for what he's done to put cycling on the map, prove that the USA can train strong riders and of course what he has done for cancer advocacy. However, in some of the interviews I've seen, he sometimes has a sort of pompous aire about it that rubs me the wrong way a bit.
Oh well, this works out quite well. Stage 11 is on again and it looks like I'll be able to pick it up right where I left off. And since I'm tapering for my race on Sunday, all I have to do tonight is sit on my ass and watch it!!!:D

Yeah, ever since 2004. He was essentially left off the squad during most of the spring races, then brought on for the tour. During the tour he did his duties for lance, but there were times that he pressed lance and in the lance dominated atomosphere of Postal/Discovery, it was taken negatively. After the 2004 season Phonak offered Landis about 4X what discovery was willing to pay, plus he would be the front man, so he took it.
If I remember from the book correctly, it was kinda Lance that took Floyd under his wing and molded him to his likeness, which would only explain why Floyd has shown flashes of a dominate rider such as Lance, and hence why they would have a begun to butt heads when Floyd began to outgrow his domestique responsibilities.
Anyhow, for me, like you, the fact that Lance and Floyd are somewhat at odds makes it more fun to root for him.

By the way, are you racing Musselman this weekend being that you live in Seneca Falls?
"The faster you run, the quicker you'll be done."
jdav, are you racing musselman? I'm staying in the area for the summer (staying in manlius and norwich) and will be racing on Sunday morning. Looks like it's really well organized so hopefully it makes for a good race and hopefully the predicted heat wave holds off...

definitely been a weird tour. interesting when you have no idea what the heck is going to happen from one day to the next. Levi blows up and pretty much blew it on the TT, then Hncapie, Salvodelli, and most of teh rest of the contenders blew up today.
Kloden and Evans were always contenders as well, post te Spanish fiasco, so ggod to see they are hanging on. But based on the attrition (sp?) rate of contenders from day to day and 3 days of Alps and another TT ahead. This thing could get all scrambled again. I do believe thought that if you're not within 10 minutes (23 riders back) of the lead currently you don't have a shot at the podium, so George and Salvodelli are toast I believe. DSC should just say o.k. Poppo is our guy from here on out, ride for him, period. He's the future of the team for TdF at least, so give him some experience as captain since we can pretty much write this one off.
Landis is just too mentally strong to drop off the podium I think, so it's just a matter of whether Kloden, Sastre, and Evans can hang or if they pop in the Alps.
When a nobody DESSEL, outrides most of the contenders 2 days in a row, there is something wrong :) Crazy stuff.
Other notes:
- T-mobile is crushing it as a team, poor Jan.
- Gerolsteiner doing great as a team, poor Levi.
- Rabobank and AG2R riding better then DSC, poor Discovery Channel - no the Hincapie Chronicles.
- Um, Lance retired. Let him go OLN and stop the lets talk to the expert segments and comparing every attack and strategy to Lance.
- Um, Al, you're not funny...
- Funny how immediately after they announced the top five finishers would have their bikes weighed Rasmussen popped :D
Anyway, my little rants and observations. Still enjoying it and am up at 4 in the morning to catch the stages.
yup as said no one knows who the leader of DSC is so they are not really racing as a team .. its more like every man for themselves.

Lance is probably very TYPE A .... but most elite athletes are going to think they are great. thats part of the psychological warfare they have been brainswashed with. it is supreme confidence. yeah .... i am sure it is arrogant to plenty but its completely normal.

I totally agree, but then again without the sensationalism of him riding in the tour, few outside the cycling realm are tuning in so I'm sure OLN is using is to try and keep some of the only-in-it-for-Lance fans interested.:D
jdav- Yup, I am doing the sprint distance Musselman this weekend- first triathlon! I'm a bit nervous! Are you coming out for it?
MavUNC- from people I know you have done the race before they have all commented that it is a well put together & organized race.
As a plus some students from my school (the chiropractic college) and probably one of the massages schools will be there offering complimentary treatment to the athletes. A prof of mine organizes our involvement with races throughout New York state is the former Villa Nova track coach, has been the team doctor at the Pan American Junior Games in Barbodos and all kinds of other stuff, likes to offer chiropractic treatment to athletes to facilitate recovery as well as help better integrate the neuromuscular system. So feel free to come get treated!
I was in the clinic on our campus today having some muscle work done to make sure my legs are loose for the race. I found out my treating intern is going up to Lake Placid Ironman next weekend to offer treatment to the athletes up there. Pretty cool! I wish I could go!!
OK, back to the regularly schedules discussion in this forum!

Post Stage 12-
Look who finally showed up today- Tean Discovery!! Well, Popovych at least.
Floyd & Team Phonak seem to use today to race smarter not harder. I'm still learning about Tour strategy though. It was hard to see them 3-4 minutes behind the breakaway for that later half of the race. I'm so use to races where the first person across the finish line wins, period. But the multi-day nature of the tour dictates that a single person can not win every single stage, so you have to know when to chase down the breakaways and when to let them go and save energy for a different day.
Good show by Popovych though.

It was good to see some life from Team Disco. Now we will see if George and the rest of the guys can rally behind Popovych and help him to the podium.
MavUNC and Tri-Newbie, I'll be there this weekend doing the sprint. Since A Tri in the Buff was changed last minute to a Duathlon because of waves, this will be my first road triathlon. I'm looking forward to the bike, that route that goes out along the east side of the lake is a nice area.

jdav- I'm doing the sprint too! My first race!

Ok, it's been over a week, let's start talking about the tour...
First off, what has happened to team discovery? Their leader, Hincapie, is over 23 minutes back. Their top rider, Jose Azevedo, is still over 7 minutes back. They're really going to have to dominate the Alps if they want to put a rider, any rider, on the podium in Paris.
And how about Mayo dropping out early in today's stage?
Then there's the man, who's hip rivals that of a 90-year old and would leave most to only hobble around, leading the tour. The next closest Amerian is over 5 minutes back in Levi Leipheimer. Landis's closest rival appears to be Denis Menchov at 1'01" back, who was able to out sprint both Landis and Leipheimer to the finish today.
Considering no one I work with could care a bit about the tour, I'd love to get some discussion going here... thoughts anyone?
