So I have a 90-minute run scheduled for this evening. The rub is that the weather forecast is absolute crap- 80-90% rain, heavy thunderstorms, etc. I ould go run on the treadmill at the gym, but anything over 30 minutes and I am bored to tears and usually dont finish those workouts.

Just curious- what would you do- treadmill or train in the rain (Downpouring- not light mist) If you go for the rain, what kind of gear do you wear to protect yourself??

Treadmill and an I-Pod. Been able to go as long as 75 minutes.

personally, i like running in the rain. once it's not really windy. i usually just wear shorts and a t-shirt. I run on grass too, so it makes the ground really soft, and easier on the legs. That's just my preference. I wouldn't like running in the rain all the time, but that's just me.

how heavy are ya talking about? I wouldn't run when it's absolutely belting down, but rain doesn't bother me. (we get a lot of it here in Ireland!)

I don't mind the rain either - it's usually a relief from the heat here in the South - but I wouldn't run if there was lightning though......

dude, they don't cancel races because of rain. lightning is one thing, but rain is nothing. just be glad all that moisture isn't in the form of humidity. go for your run.

If it's warm a t-shirt, shorts, ball cap and run shoes. Have fun. Rain is fun, just be careful not to slip. That's what I would do. Here in Vancouver we have like 8 months of the stuff. No biggie. If it's cold just wear a light jacket. Hey, you're gonna get wet from the sweat! What's the diff. with rain?

tri-newbie-nerd, I'm in the same boat. I had a club ride scheduled for tonight but with all of upstate and central New York under a massive thunder cloud I've been forced to make other plans. So, I'll probably be on the Y treadmill for a little bit but not too long as I'm in the middle of my taper :). With the weather situation around here I'd say that the treadmill would probably be best since it's supposed to get crazy later today.

You can swap that workout with a shorter or indoor one that's coming up in a few days if its thundering, but otherwise go for it.

This is my last chance to get a workout in before I start my taper for the race this Sunday...so I can't swap it out for a shorter one.

And no this isn't a light rain, if it were, I wouldn't have bothered posting. This is monsoon type rain- with lightening mixed in at times. About an hour ago it was raining so hard it was raining up!

haha...i would normally run in anything but that kind of rain. I know what your talking about when it rains "up" and yea...that would just be brutal to run in! Hope the weather turns around for ya so you dont end up on a treadmil

I did.:D

It let up enough that I made it out for my run. Only really started raining the last five minutes of my run. I was soaked by the time I got home, but it was worth it. What I learned about my limits after pushing threw the crappy weather and upset stomach was well worth it.

If you race long enough, you'll have to race in rain so hard that it would make Noah concerned.
Run and ride in all sorts of crap. It gets you out of the "fair weather athlete catagory." You'll be ready for anything that race day throws at you.
And anyway...skin is wash and wear.

OTOH, a long TM session is good for your mental toughness. I've run 2:15 on the TM. Advantages: you can control the pace. Definitely increase pace about every 15', and try to end at tempo pace. Repeat this mantra: "I CAN DO ANYTHING FOR 15 MINUTES." Or do fartlek or a ladder, changing speed by .1-.2 every 5 minutes. You can do ANYTHING for 5 minutes, right?

It sounds like you really don't want to go in the rain. If you can make yourself have a higher quality run on the treadmill, then go for it.

The more "insane" the weather is...the more i want to run. I enjoy it. Running through rain, snow or hail..or floods and wind, just pumps me up.
Actually, I started running one day because of a bad breakup. I just felt like i HAD to run. And when i went out, 5 minutes in the run, on my puny untrained legs, it started to snow...that then turned into hail(painful but i kept going), and eventually into rain(downpour not drizzle). It was so weird, but i loved every minute of it. I continued running and eventually, then i got into Triathlons.

Treadmill (TM) running requires a very high degree of mental toughness. I'd rather run for 3-hours outside in the rain than 1 hour on the hamster wheel. But if you can do 7 miles on a TM, you are truly a zen master.

Congrats on running in the rain. I can't wait till the rain hits our area!

Rain is pretty rare in Arizona, but I welcome it when it comes. I have managed to ruin 2 iPods getting caught out in the rain but c'est la vie!

I don't mind running in the rain.
I ran the Hartford Marathon in 2005 and it poured for almost the whole race. It felt like I was running on sponges instead of shoes.

I have a few pairs of running shoes in my rotation so I have time to let a pair dry and use another pair.

Just don't wear that copper shirt ;-D

If I do a long run on a treadmill (1 1/2 - 2 hours) I pop in a DVD an watch a movie to keep me occupied.

Nothing to it, but to do it
