Are triahtlon clubs worth joining?

WHere I am at, I know several triathletes, but few of them seem to belong to any clubs. Part of that is probably because the two 'local' clubs are still over an hour away.

However, I am moving to Queens, NY next month and I thought perhaps I might look into joining the NY Tri Club or maybe even teh Brooklyn Tri Club. Any thoughts?

I just recently joined TriWisconsin. I think it has been worth it. Especially as they do organized rides on some of the local race venues. Which was the primary reason that I joined. We have a second ride coming up on the IMWI course. Another great benefit is organized OWS. That has helped a lot. I still train mostly on my own, but lots of good information talking to other triathletes.

A tri group was recently formed in my area, and it is well worth joining. We meet once a month, and there's always something to be learned. It's great for networking with other triathletes and getting help or giving help to other members. I've had a great experience so far - great people, great motivation......

Btw - where are you moving to in Queens - I was born and raised there.

It's not official yet because we still have to find an apartment, but we are loooking for a place in Astoria, Long Island City, or Sunnyside

I joined a tri club this spring when training for my first 1/2 ironman, as I had no training partners and wanted advice and moral support. I'm busy with work and don't always have time to join for group events, but mine has added benefits other than the obvious advice and moral support. There are group rides, coached track workouts, discounts to local shops and the local triathlon and the best part so far was the built in cheering squad I got from wearing a jersey at a recent triathlon.
I know some other clubs that have membership which includes uniforms, bike fittings and things like masters swimming, so that could be something to look at. Plus if you're moving to a new area, its a good way to meet people.

Our club has group workouts, discounts, etc. as well. I don't think there is any "down side" of belonging to a club, although it is a lot of work for the people who put it together and keep it going, but I for one appreciate it : )

Good luck on your apartment hunting, I'm from Astoria (hubby's from LIC) and both our fams are still there. It's a great place, especially if you work in the city.

Depends on the club. I find mine worthwhile. The most useful part is probably the list serve. Easy way to coordinate workouts, carpooling for races, general Q&A, is this race worthwhile, etc. We also get great discounts from sponsors. It's also a pretty inexpensive clubs. Some charge quite a bit more, but you get team clothing, coaching and other perks.
