General TDF question...
Don´t take my word on this but if I don´t remember wrong UCI rules prohibit that. I remember they are only permited in Time Trials.
Correct me if I´m wrong!
Hyperactive Trifueler!!!! (I refuse to let the status go :p)
Right, there are strict rules on the bike geometry for road racing and time trialing. Part safety, part tradition, road racing doesn't allow time trial bars or disc wheels.
OK, while we are exploring TDF rules and regulations-- women are conspicuously absent in the race? Is that because they aren't any female pro cyclists yet good enough to compete in the race or are they not allowed to participate?
Or perhaps they all just look the same in the those outfits!
(Has anyone noticed that? That many of the bikers not only have the same build, but look the same, they all seem to have the same mouth and jaw line. Except for Landis maybe- you can definitely tell he's from Amish country!!!)

I believe they have their own version of the tour. A peleton twice the size would be pretty dangerous.
Here's a report from the women's race: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/roa/News2006/20060629_Womens_TDF.asp
Cycling coverage is indeed lacking. Cycling for men is barely covered (OLN does help). Media demand for women's cycling has about as much clout as women's softball (possibly less).
This will all change of course when my daughter starts bike racing ;)

Well, I had read somewhere that there had been an analogous women's event, but it was cancelled in 2003 because of lack of sponsorship money. I guess they don't have Title IX in Europe...

The rules governing aero-bars, bar extensions, cowhorns, etc, are very clear, and its the same reason why triathletes riding triathlon bikes with aero-bars, etc cannot race their tri bikes in whats called a "mass-start" race. Heres the direct rules from the USCF by-laws (2006):
(d) The handlebar ends shall be solidly plugged and attachments thereto shall be fashioned in such a way as to minimize danger without impairing steering. Handlebars used for steering with ends, features, or attachments that extend forward or upward or that provide support for other than the the rider's hands are permitted only in time trial and pursuit events (not in Team Sprint); however, attachments that point upward on the brakehoods of road bicycles are allowed if the distance between them is greater than 25 cm (9.8 inches). [disqualification] (e) Bicycles must meet

If the first 8 or so stages are dominated by the sprinters, how come they don't ride TT bikes. Or at least slap a pair of aero bars on their handel bars?? It's driving me nuts seeing these breakaways, and the guys are leaning on their hoods...am i missing something here??
