If you have to recommed two, what would they be?
If I could only take two supplements, I would choose a multi-vitamin, multi-mineral and fish oil. With today's farming pracitices, I don't think its possible to get the full amount of trace minerals needed in the diet. Selenium for instance is a vital cofactor for several powerful antioxidant enzymes, but it is tradgically deficient in our soil.
Fish oils I would take (providing they come form a manufacturer willing to certify that they are mercury free) especially as an athlete for their anti-inflammatory properties and positive effects on HDLS and LDLs in the blood. Furthermore, there is so much research on the positive effects of fish oils that its almmost a wonder that anyone could not supplement them.

Great point, tri_newbi_nerd, mentioning Selenium I was not totally aware about the lack in our diet.
Fish oil, tremendous benefits....particulary for peole over 45, where taking care of your lipid profile is very important...
Thanks...interesting points to talk about

If I could only take two supplements they would be: Liquid carnitine and my own custom pack from a practitioner line that contains antioxidants, fish oil, GLA, and multi. You didn't say they had to be only 2 pills... I love being able to design my own pack!
Thanks for the imput TriLizard, I think is very practical and handy that you customize your own pack....and you are right...is not only pills, could be anything....
Two for Fish Oil, interesting...I haven´t been much into fish oil...but great imput.

Dr. Rios-
You haven't been one for fish oil???? I know we tend to have some good supplement knowledge, you have to start taking it!!! It's an anti inflammatory- good for PEG 2 and 3. With all the training and carbohydrates we eat- fish oil is ideal. As much as we do cardiovascular training- we may put our body at risk for high stress. Fish oil is excellent to CVD risk, not to mention it is great for brain food!! (DHA)
How about Zipp 404s and Fish oil? :)

This is great stuff...really.
As a doctor and athlete guys I have to say, that I didn´t pay much attention to fish oil. Very interesting all the benefits, and the cost is not bad, even here in South America. A good supplement, there is some stuff published about it, so time to read this afternoon, and more to talk about...thanks guys for your imput.

Supplements is a hot topic, that everyone would love to know more, do the right thing, and find the golden supplement that will make you swimm like Michel Phelps, ride like Lance, and run like a Kenian marathoner.....
We, around the world, get tons of adds, information, by magazines, radio, tv about new stuff that is around the market.
Particulary young athletes, serious or recreational, are the ones who absorb this propaganda, and it can lead to confusion, risk, and waste of money.
Multivitamins, every single trace element pills, protein powders, creatine, NO pills, aminoacids, natural herbs supplements(ginko, yohimbe bark extract, etc) linoleic acid...I have read questions about EPO in this forums:eek: and the list goes on.
Some of them are good, some not so much, and some might be dangerous to take it, or just a balanced good diet is enough? or maybe natural supplementation the best deal?
Here in the forums there are great seasoned athletes, nutritionists/dietitians,health profetionals who would be nice to read what the might recomend...discuss about it...and maybe find a consensus, to be better and wiser, cleaner athletes.
