70.3- What is it?
70.3 is just the total distance for a half IM.

The World Triathlon Corporation, the guys who own "Ironman" changed their Half Ironman races to a brand called 70.3 (basically the miles in the race). So there is now a World Championships for the Half distance and other non-WTC owned events are part of the series, like Vineman, etc. More info at http://www.ironman.com, should be a 70.3 tab.
All above, plus, a clever new marketing scheme. M-Dot sells!

I'm not sure if clever is the word I'd use. I don't think it will ever catch on like IM. I just got back from Buffalo Springs this weekend and the awards took forever, because they couldn't give away the 70.3 championship slots. They tried to make it a big deal like earning Kona slots, but it's just not the same.
with all the Iron and 1/2 Iron distances, they just needed a marketing slogan to promote THEIR races (as opposed to a race that wasn't an offical Ironman Brand race)
Ironman says 140.6 and I guess they thought that Half Ironman didn't have the ZING that 70.6 does..

I guess they made a mad amount of money selling stickers that say 140.6. Maybe they were thinkin' "We can make more money selling new stickers that say 70.3."
Anyway,it's about money, the corner stone of Triathlon.

So I joined USAT a new months back and today I received a newsletter today and I noticed that several "70.3" races were advertisied. Pardon my ignorance (and yes I did a search prior to posting & came up empty), but what is this? I'm pretty new to the sport (first race is in 3.5 weeks) but can't figure out what this 70.3 business is.
Thanks in advance!
