When and where do you wear your numbers?

I've done three sprints but I just signed up for another with over a 1000 participants. The three before were put on by local clubs so we only need body markings.

I know I don't need to wear the numbers on the swim but do I on the bike?

And if I do is it worth getting the belt to attach it to?

This is also my first race with a tri suit so I can go a little quicker in the transitions.

any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You'll get a number to attach to your bike and one for the run. Pick up a race belt to attach the run number to and you can clip it around your waist nice and quick!

I'd recommend getting a race number belt too. In my first two tris, I found the number would catch the wind and flap around when I was riding.

On a belt, you can just turn it around so it's behind you. It stays out of the way pretty well.

Unless the race rules specifically require me to wear the number on the bike, I won't. I put the race number belt in one of my running shoes (so I don't forget about it) and put the belt on in T2.

Often,as you said, you get three numbers.
One for the front of the helmet...for photos really and for ID.
One for the bike...many folks attach it to the seat post (I do).
Some to the top tube, some to the down tube if it's an aero/wide one. Folks often cut the numbers down to fit better. It is real important to have the number on the bike as they won't let you into or out of Transition with out it. And besides...the officials need to see the number when you get caught drafting! ;)
The third goes on the waist belt..yea,get one.
Now, some people ,if they wear a wetsuit, have the belt on as well as their biking outfit underneath the suit to save time in T1.
Others would rather keep the number in T1 and snap it on after the swim. You'll see it done both ways.
And remember...USAT officials get really cranky if they can't see your number.

ditto for me. i wear the number on a race belt for the run. no need to wear it on the bike unless mandated.

so i forgot to put my number on coming out of T2 this past weekend...i went back to get it blowing 6 mins in what turned out to be a less than stellar run anyway.

if you still have the chip, does it really matter if you have the bib (finish line photos, aside)?

Most race directors require you to be wearing your number on the run course. They can DQ you for not wearing it on the run or not having it visible on your bike.

I guess it all depends on race and local federation rules.

For us here in Guatemala we only get one number wich you have to have on your back on the bike and in your front in the run.

If you don´t have a race belt they give you a piece of elastic band to build yourself and improvised race belt.

I have a race belt anf found ti was a nice comfortable investment that keeps the number visible and where it´s supossed to be all the time.

I put my race belt and number on under my wetsuit. Therefore, I don't have to worry about it for the rest of the day. Then nothing more than spinning it from back to front if needed.
Just know the rules for the race that you are in regarding the placement of stickers and numbers.
