How competitve should I be (Or should I expect?)
This is your first ...ever? Relax, have fun don't worry about your time. Afterwards, look back, think where you can improve and go from there.
You could do really well or you could get spanked or end up mid-pack...but you will finish. There is simply no way to tell..until you experience it for yourself.
Oh...you'll find that age often has nothing to do with it. Guys in my age group (not me mind you) often thrash guys in yours. And we both get thrashed by women in the 40-44!
Have fun and let us know how it goes!

As it is your first race, don't worry about where you place. It is your first race after all. Just go out and give it all you've got and evaluate your times afterwards. Look at your times compared to the podium finishers in your AG and that will tell you what to work on.
This is all excellent advice. The first one was a total shock for me. The first transition seemed like I was standing still as everyone stormed by me. There is alot that can only be learned by doing it. You should do fine.

Hey all,
I am in my first ever triathalon this weekend (1/4 mile swilm, 9 mile hilly bike, 5k hilly run). I've been training pretty steady and am wondering what to expect of myself.
I come from a strong swimming/cycling background, but HATE running. In training I can acheive the following:
Swim 1/4 mile around 6 minutes in a pool. ( I usually swim at least a mile with negative 1/4 mile splits, starting around 7:15 and on the last 1/4 mile around 6:30)
On the bike ride I am looking at around 25-27 minutes. The run is where I fear I will get killed. If I can come in under 25 minutes for the 5 k I will be happy.
Should I expect to finish so so or am I about to get blown by this weekend? I'm 34, btw.
