A threat to Eagleman...
I haven't done any of the races out there (and I believe that the Blackwater Du is already cancelled) but I lived in Cambridge for a summer, went to school in Salisbury and now live in Delaware. This area is definitely worth saving.
Yes, the Du is cancelled for this year, but it will be back...It's a great race and has often been used as a qualifier for worlds...

Thanks for that info Anton. I'm thinking of doing Eagleman next year. I just did the Viewtrail 100 Century ride out in Berlin last weekend - there are so many centuries and tris that take place in that beautiful area. It would be devastating for them to destroy those farmlands and the natural habitat of the area. I know some retirees out there who live there just to ride and participate in all the centuries. You can already see the devastation from all the trees they've been cutting down lately.
Speaking of farmlands and such, have you (who live in the DC area) gone riding out in Poolesville? I do a ride out there every Wed night and we go through all the preserved farmland, which cannot be developed - there is some great riding through there - little traffic, good rolling hills. Definitely check it out if you haven't!
Thanks for the info, I have passed it on to a local tri club (TRICATs). Hopefully this measure can be defeated.
Thanks for the tip, Anton. I grew up in MD and still love my home state. Everytime I go back I'm amazed at how much it seeems like DC and Balto are almost fused by subdivision after subdivision. So much open space has already been lost inland it saddens me to think what people continue to want to give up.
I've signed the petition and sent the link on to people I know.
Again, thank you so much for bringing this issue to our attention!!
Thanks for the heads-up, Anton! The Eagleman was my first 70.3.
I would hate to see that happen...

Thanks for the info Anton.
I will be doing the Chessie Man next year and I have been considering the Eagleman as well. I am glad they are not going to take away the open space.
Conservation wins!
EDIT...WTLW for me!

On or around June 30th, The Dorchester County,Maryland development board will be discussing if the construction of a new resort should be allowed in the Cambridge Area.
1,000 acres of farm land are involved along the Blackwater River and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
The site lies on Egypt Road south of Cambridge. Egypt road is part of the Eagleman,ChesapeakeMan and Blackwater Duathlon courses. Those courses travel through the Blackwater Refuge, home to bald eagles and many other species of birds and animals.
The Resort will involve 2,700 dwelling units,a 100 room hotel and golf course.
It has been suggested that the money would be better spent in helping to revitalize Cambridge itself.
Maryland has lost 50% of it's farm land in recent decades. This loss adds to the degradation of the Chesapeake Bay and the Del-Mar-Va..the site of many triathlons and centuries.
This resort will "change the character of the area forever."
If you have ever raced or want to race Eagleman or the Chessie or ridden a century on the Eastern Shore of Maryland or had one of your favorite races disappear due to sprawl...Please go to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation web site:
cbf.org and click on the link below the ad to sign a petition.
Thanks,
Anton
