How much water do you carry
During a race: Aid stations, use them, thats what they're there for.
During long training rides: carry $ and stop for more.
If you wish to be out front, then act as if you were behind.
Make your training route two 50-55 mile loops and refill after the first loop.

For a race 2 bottles is plenty between aid stations.
When I am doing my long rides - I plan a water stop at around 55-60 miles. I carry my sports drink powder mix with me. Buy some water and dump in the powder and also keep some plain water for the gels.
Treat it like the special needs pickup on the IM bike course.

I have a behind the seat carrier that holds 2, plus 1 on the frame, those 3 with a camelpack would probably get me somewhere between 75-90 miles..
you're only other option is to stop somewhere and refill like the others are saying...

I carry three bottles...two on the bike one in the shirt.(That's what those big pockets are for!)
I try and plan rides with a stop somewhere. Or as you can do on the Chessieman course..do loops. That leaves you just two 56 mile laps between refueling.
I often do long rides on the C & O Canal...Water pumps every 6 to 10 miles or so with some stores.

I'm planning on biking the C&O Canal this summer as part of my training plan (two 90 mile days with some camping in between). Do you run 'cross tires for the towpath?

Yup...cross tires...the towpath conditions vary so much it's good to have the traction. I also run sreet tires on the MTB...pushing THAT down the canal is quite a workout!
I've done the whole canal four times in the last 5 years..last year in one day. Let me know if you need any help or advice.

I now realize you're refering to long trainging rides. I have some large 32 oz. Gatorade bottles. I fill three and pack them on my bike and stuff my jersey pocket with Powerbars and Fig-Newtons. Unless it's extremely hot that load usually last 5hrs. If I need more liquid I know a the location of a few fresh water springs along the routes that I ride. And of course, I will stop to buy food/liquid if I need it.

For the training rides I start with have 2 bottles in the cages on the bike and a bottle of water in my jersey. After I empty one water bottle (cytomax in both those) I dump in the water from the plain disposable water and drop in a Nuun tablet. Nuun doesn't have any calories but does replenish electrolytes, so I get most calories from Clif bars and the like.
Then I also have a couple little markets I drop into to replenish water or get some gatorade if it's particularly warm out.
If any of you guys haven't tried Nuun I would suggest it! Especially if you use other sources for your calories. It has just a hint of taste and is not sticky, goes down just like water. I started using it this year and have improved my hydration considerably!

2 on the frame and 1 in the jersey pocket. OR a behind the seat bottle launcher can hold 2 bottles. 4 bottles should be good for 100+.







As I'm getting ready for my first IM (Cheasapeakman) I'm doing more and more long rides.
How do you guys carry enough water to keep you hydrated for a 110+ mile ride? I currently ride with a Camelbak and a water bottle on the frame. I finish both on a 50 mile ride, and I would probably like to drink more. How do you do to the mid-ride refile? Or do you have an areo bottle that is easy to refill.
