Ok guys question about breathing while doing the swim...I'm hoping to do an ironman in december and so need some advice on what is certainly my weakest part!!

When do you guys breathe? Every 2, 3, 4?? Or do you start out with an idea of breathing at a certain rate and then speed it up as you fatigue....do other things make a difference??

At the moment im breathing every 4 but once i start to fatigue sneak in another breath after 2...so am doin 4, 2, 4, 2...and then when im really knackered breathe every 2...anyone have any suggestions?

Once I settle into my pace, I usually breath every 2 strokes. I have never felt that alternate side breathing was all it's cracked up to be, although I understand the mechanical benefit. As long as you keep your head low and rotate your head as little as possible as to reduce drag. If every 4 makes you feel oxygen deprived, the benefits of keeping your head down can be offset by oxygen debt and fatigue.

Of course it's 'effing hard, it's IRONMAN!

2 always...it's easiest. I switch sides every time I touch a wall to keep a good balance.

I breathe every 2. The other day my former coach said most triathletes breathe every 2 or 3.

in the pool, i'm usually good every 4. but open water, i can't seem to maintain that yet, so it's probably 4,2,2,4,2,2,etc. i can breathe both sides if necessary but it sure isn't comfortable yet.
