I have a set Zip wheels, for which take tubular tires. I'm looking to get a new set of tires to race on this summer, for about 3 olympics distances, 2 half ironmans, and 1 ironman.

For Ironman, do you usually get a set of new tires just before therace, therfore glue or re glue specifically for that race. I typically just use one set all year long, and i am wondering if this will hold up for Ironman Wisc. Should i get a new set just for that race, or re glue???

If you can eliminate one more worry on race day..do it. For both my IM's I had new rubber glued on and ready to go. Had a few miles on them for race day. Used the old ones as spares. No worries. Now others may tell you they rode the IM with tires nearing 500 miles or more...I didn't want to take that chance.

Keep track of the mileage on your tubulars. They are expensive for a reason--they are very durable. I will use the same set over 2 racing seasons, which include an Ironman, 2 race rehearsal rides of 112 miles, and 3-4 shorter races. So I guess I go about 1500 miles on a set.

Before the IM, inspect the tires carefully for wear and gluing. If in doubt, reglue them and/or replace them.

I agree with Kona on this, the amount of actual use a set of race tires will get is minimal. If you replaced them at the begining of the season, that rubber will be fine for the Ironman even at the end of the season (with the exception of any damage that might occur). I currently have a couple of halfs a full IM on my race tires, I plan on using the same set in LP this year. So, figure maybe 300 miles with training prep rides included and they show almost no wear. I'm not worried at all.

That said, you need to do what your comfortable with. Sure Peter Reid might sew up a new set of conti's for each race, but he didn't shell out the $200 for each pair either. I'd say check'em if they have perform well and are in good shape go with it.
