Running away from running!

Hey folks,

lately I've been doing a lot of running training and I was doing this only running worrying about time and not distance. I was running 1 h straight below LT. The thing is, it is too slow to stay below LT!!!

And today I drove my car on the running course to check the distance and IT IS ACTUALLY PRETTY MUCH SMALLER than I thought!

The thing is, I am thinking about becoming a roadie and quiting this running and swimming thing because it does not fit in my head that I can bike 23mph and cannot run a 5min/km pace easily!

It makes me feel depressed! I am thinking maybe doing fartlek and intervals without HRM only by RPE and seeing if this works!

Running an hour a day under "LT" is really only going to make you good at one thing, running an hour a day under "LT." Mix it up a bit, throw away the heart rate monitor, go for some fartleks on trials, do new courses, do some light interval workouts. Doing the same thing you've always done will get you the same thing you've always gotten. Don't give up so easily, just try mixing it up a bit.

Today I did a running session with a training buddy. Crappy!

7min/km with above 80% MHR average bpm. Now I'm gonna run as hard as I can for 2 months straight... It will bring me more benefit than LSD, won't it?

I think you need to mix things up. All hard running, or all easy, aren't how you'll see the most improvement. Each LSD run has a purpose, each interval run or tempo run has a purpose. You have to find the right mix for your body and goals, but A MIX is probably key.

As the others have said, you need to mix it up. If you're running long and slow, the only thing you'll be good at is running long and slow. Toss in a hill day, an interval day, tempo runs, fartleks, whatever, but mix it up.

The thing to keep in mind, is that you need a balance of easy/hard days as well as a balance between disciplines. If you're hammering on the bike today, you shouldn't be hammering on the run tomorrow (most times). Your body needs recovery from a hard workout, whatever it is.

Personally, I only use my HRM on my LSD to keep me at the correct pace. The other days, you should be able to tell if you're over/under the line.

...and give it time. We all have our specialties. Yours appears to be running. It takes time working on your weaker skills to bring them up to par.

the best thing imo to get your mile (or km time) down is to just run 400's til you cant stand anymore :D

Run 400's straight or intervals? I began to run in a 400m track. It is much better to keep track of the pace, of course!

Also, thank you folks for your feedback. I am gonna try to mix up things more, like it's been said here.
