Neck Pain on bike
The key for me was to relax my shoulders. I didn't realize for a long time that I was riding with my shouders almost up around my ears. Now I make a conscious effort to lower and relax them when I notice it and have seen a reduction in neck pain.
Man! I suffer with this all the time..in fact it forced me out of a few races last year...
Arthritis? In my case yes... I occoasionally get numb fingers from it. My neck vertabre are a mess.
Have been to the Dr. and Physical Therapist and it helps..but the pain is still there at times.
See your Dr. Don't see an age group posted, so I can't say it may be age related. But I've seen Arthritis in younger folks too.
When did you have your bike fit? Our bodies change over time :(
and maybe you need a re-fit.

I have to make a conscious effort to release and relax my shoulders (especially my left).
Also when you last did your fit - were you having this neck problem previous to the fit. Cuz they can make accomodations for problem areas i.e. lower back, neck etc. but they have to know about it when doing the fit.

I don't think it is arthritis - i am 33, but you never know, right? I was only fitted about 2 months ago and mentioned it to him...so he did make accommodations i believe..in fact, my lower back used to bother me, but not more...bike fit plus back strengthening exercises...so with all that said, I will focus on relaxing my neck and shoulders and continue to stretch etc...I am doing Lake placid in July so i think it should be a good mix of sitting and in the aero position so that should be good for me/it..thanks for the comments
Ya, a strong core really helps.
And stretch out on the bike periodically as well. I will pop up and ride standing for a minute or so, works great for me - otherwise in areo.

I'd say neck pain is normal. Nope.. not 'normal' but 'common'. I don't know if core routines will help it or maybe you're holding the bar too strongly.

Neck pain particulary in endurance sports...like long rides...sometimes long runs...usually are a resultant of muscle stress...to tight, wrong position, or both....and most of the time we are not aware...
Checking with your primary care doc, is a good and healthy thing to do...just in case...arthritis mmmm, depending on age, but you never know...some folks start getting symptoms at an early age...nothing to scare you off, but is a healthy thing to check with a doc
A re-fit would be a nice starting point...
A good relaxing and streching routine with good 10-15 min, prior and after the ride would be a good idea....
The streching routine will go also with a few excercises to improve your muscle area strengh...in the lifting lingo all those muscles are called "The Yoke" and a good routine of excercices consist with neck curls...shoulder shrugs and things like that...
Now...all of that after you check with your doc, or a therapist....
Hope you get better soon my friend...

Let me first say that i have had a pro bike fit, but whenever i do my long rides...4-6hours, my neck definitely gets more sore as the ride goes on. I am fine on shorter rides.
Once i am off the bike, it is fine. I checked with a few friends and they say they also get some pain...are there any exercises, ideas, or things i can do to minimize?
