When I hit the beach, I notice that people play in the water within footing depth. I'd like to go swim but I don't want to swim out on my own. Should I tell a lifeguard that I'm going to be swimming out so they can keep an eye out?
How do you arrange your open water training swims in the ocean?

When I used to swim in the ocean I told the lifeguard what I'd be doing. Sometimes, if I was passing other lifeguards I'd pop up onto the beach to let them know to watch me, too. But I'm pretty paranoid about ocean swimming alone.
Now I OW swim in a lake. It's almost scarier than the ocean with all of the boats ond jet skis.
I am actually much more afraid of sea creatures rather than depth or lifeguard stuff! I've never done an OWS.
This is how I OWS train:

In all seriousness, you should notify the lifeguards if you want them watching for you. Also, make sure you wear a bright swim cap, like day-glo orange or green. Other than that, you're on your own, unless you have a friend who's willing to accompany you on a jet ski or ocean kayak...
I just knew that Cliff Bar commercial was going to be in this thread...
Noel.
Still loving that commercial
Haha, that commercial is great!:D
I usually go with a big group, and we keep an eye out for each other. There also often ends up being a person on shore keeping an eye out as well.
I have an ocean kayak, and have thought a few times about taking it and alternating swimming/paddling with a group, but we haven't tried it yet. Then I'd get paddling and swimming time! Two things hard to do alone in the ocean.
how about grabbing a boogie board and attaching it to your ankle by a leash and swimming while towing it? This way you are swimming with something to hang on to if you need some floatation? Does that sound like a good idea?
huh... that could be a good idea. I have a couple of those lying around, too. But I think I still prefer the security in numbers if in the ocean...
