Most difficult part of triathlon
Hello there. I just did my first sprint event, and I can only really speak for myself. I too was a runner who wasn't very accomplished on the swim and bike. The swim takes more technique, but since I'm very comfortable in the water I think it's kind of fun. I find the bike a little more taxing because I am strong enough to be fast, but not good enough with my handling skills to manage speed all that safely. :eek: But I'm putting in the miles and starting to enjoy that part too.
I really think you will like the variety of workouts. I don't know about you, but I was starting to have a hard time working up the enthusiasm for yet another Saturday morning 19-mile run! :rolleyes:

The hardest part...is what you think is the hardest part.
It comes with experience.
Each discipline has it's challanges and you look to overcome them.
The hardest part for me...? Coming up with the cash!

the hardest part for me was (and still is) swimming. training in a 25m pool gave me a false sense of security. swimming 1000m in a 25m pool is FARRRR easier than swimming 500m in a lake. no joke. i now swim in a 50m pool since im back at home and its muuuuch better for training. that's my opinion anyways.
since you are probably fairly good at running i'd suggest taking swimming lessons to learn good technique FIRST. then concentrate on distance and form when you practice. that's about where im at.
Because it is difficult, is part of what makes it worth doing.
Swimming, is still by far the most difficult. But at least now it is enjoyable.
Wish I could get up at 5am for a race - Usually it is about 3:30 for me.

hey, all. 1st post here. i come froma running background and swimming was by far the most difficult part for me. i have put in a lot of laps the past year so i am not that anxious about swimming anymore. i just take my time and get through it as comfortable as possible. 1999 is right about 25yd pools. they can be really boring.
I agree with this - training in a pool doesn't prepare you to the more dynamic environment of an open water swim on race day. The calm, clear, open lane of a short clean warm pool vs. choppy crowded washing machine of a zero visibility murky ocean water makes the swim a pretty big challenge. With biking and running, you can come closer to simulating the race situation by hitting the road whereas open water training is more challenging formost people to get to on a regular basis. I find swimming one of the most challenging events because it's so technical on top of everything else.

I come from swimming through college and it is by far the easiest. I'm working hard on the Bike and run.
The hardest part of the race for me is getting out of the swim in the top 10(in general)and out the gate....peddling as fast as I can and getting passed by all those 'good' cyclists. I HATE that.
Sooooooooo.....Since this was the bike's fault and not mine....I ordered a new bike....so there!:p
Hardest part is when all your friends go out to the bar the night before and you can't.

For me it was the swim as well. The worst part is when you first get in the washing machine and get hit, kicked, and swam over. Not to mention having to look for the next buoy while trying to catch a breath. It's even worse when your 1 race is in the ocean and you can only breath on 1 side, which happens to be the side the waves are coming from. Like mentioned above, it gets easier with experience.
I'm a SCUBA diver, but open water swimming is still a big challenge for me. I need to practice my swimming.:)
For my first triathlons it was actually the run. The swim stunk, the bike is where I passed everybody, but I was amazed at how gassed I was for the run. I was used to passing everyone on the run too and was disappointed to find myself in the middle of the pack.
Since then I've much improved my swim, and I guess the hardest part now is the pacing of the race. I normally push to hard and that makes the run the hardest part. I need to work on that negative split stuff.

Hi everyone this is my first post here. I'm a runner, but lately I can't seem to get Triathlon out of my mind and has decided to give it a try.
What do most newbies (specially those coming from a runnng background) consider to be the most difficult part of a triathlon race? I can swim but not very good at it. I'm also not a very good biker.:rolleyes:
