Crankset/STI shifter question
Youre really not supposed to use the big/ big combo. But thats why there is a trim control on those shifters. If its still rubbing, you need to reset your FD. The little ring will not casue the rubbing.

Yes, I do it with mine and have been for over 3yrs now with no prob. Key is to set the left shifter properly. There is an extra click but it is possible.
When adjusting stay with the left shifter in the lowest position (i.e., 39ring position) then adjust it to the smaller tooth of the two, not click it up to the large and set the front derailleur with the trim screw so that it goes no further than the distance you need to move the chain from the lower front chainring to the larger. Good Luck. It does work.

Thanks for the info. When it comes to gearing (hell, bike components in general) I really don't know much at all. I should grab a good book on the subject and learn how to tinker with all of this stuff.

I was just wondering if it's possible to change from a 3-ring crankset to a 2-ring one without having to buy new STI shifters for my bike as well. Can you use shifters designed for 3 gears on a bike with only 2?
I assume there would be some differences in shifting mechanics, but I never ever use the smallest cog on my bike, and having it there makes my chain rub on my front derailleur when I'm using the bigger front gears with the bigger back ones.
Edit: Shimano's website actually answered my question for me. Apparently the 105 front STI shifters are compatible with both double and triple cranksets. Yay!
Now if I could only afford the Ultegra or Dura Ace parts I want...
