Shark!!!!!!!!!!
A 5 foot shark is not small! At least not for me....I would be out of that water for a week! But that's because I'm paranoid of sharks.
Just be careful out there...
Ya, I hate sharks  - now I'll be skiddish in my OWS tomorrow - even tho it is in a lake!

would I finish - UM NO!
would I walk on water back to the shore - UM YEAH!!
lakes around here are fine.. but if your in south carolina, florida, alabama, etc. you've got to watch out for gators. . .
and while sharks intimidate me tremendously.... gators scare the hell out of me..

Oh boy... how I love to swim in a pool! I am lucky these events are not common here! Not in the beach nor in lakes!

Ya, I would try to sneak back to shore as fast as possible. Probably creating a new personal record :D
Punch that shark in the face Paul. If he tries to get away, grab him, pull him back and punch him again.
If you wish to be out front, then act as if you were behind.

LOL....I'm origionally from South Africa where an average great white is about 15-20 ft  ....I'm not a big fan of swimming during feeding time :D !
They're always there. It's just is you actually see them or not. Always there. Always. ;)

I'm always complaining about how cold the water is over here in Ireland but if it means i dont have any encounters with SHARKS i'll gladly put up with it! A friend of mine was bitten by a seal once, not quite as bad as a shark bite though :D

stick your fingers in it's eyes, up its A$$ or in it's gills, all are equally effective!:D
like tri guy says they are always there. One of my favouite open water swims goes around the headland from one beach to another. On a clear day you can see the bottom and often you see a shark or 2 floating around down the bottom.
im with speedster, being an aussie, the sharks here are equally as large. besides sharks usuallly attack from below so you will see it before you feel it.....
You just try to put it out of your mind or swim real early before the sharks wake up.........:p

I've apparently swam with 6 feet reef sharks, learning this after my ocean swim off of Hopetown in Elbow Cay. Asked the fisherman what he was fishing for as I was drying off, he laughed, and said, "You didn't see it? It was right next to you. Six feet. That's what I'm fishing for, reef sharks".
That's when I started to get a little sea sick. :)
I've got another story, which I've posted here somewhere about a swim I did near Pismo beach. I definitely got a PR on that swim.
Just remember: Ampullae of Lorenzini, sharks have nerve receptors in their face/nose area, they really don't like being punched their face. Sharks also do not feed on humans, they bite out of curiosity. We don't taste good to them.
Whether they feed on us or not, I will stick to the murky green Texas lakes! Sharks (ok and stinging jelly fish) are the #1 reason I'm shooting to do IMOO for my first IM next year, not FL. I'd rather spend 7 hours in the hills than swim with sharks.

OK now I'm really freaked out about IMFL...Ugh! I guess I should take solace in the fact that in a field of 2000 or so swimmers the probability that any interested shark would pick me has to be fairly low. Dang! I may have nightmares tonight....

Last summer, the media sensationalized what was actually an average year.. including several panhandle attacks ;) Just to give your brain some more fuel for those dreams...
In reality, youre right, with that many swimmers in the water in the same place at the same time, a shark is going to avoid that like crazy... or just swim deeper :D

JUST KIDDING

Some incentive there to at least stay in the main body of swimmers - It is always the stragglers off the back that get eaten first.

Is anyone else besides me paranoid about swimming in the ocean past waist deep water? There's just something about being out there...and not knowing what's beneath you...and knowing it COULD be a shark or jelly fish or something else nasty.
Fresh water inlets are equally as bad, because bull sharks can and do live in fresh water! Not only this, but they have the highest amounts of testosterone than ANY other animal including lions and elephants.
Actualy, it has been said time and again that most attacks take place in shallow water- 3 feet or less...
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
You see though, my fear of sharks is irrational. Despite the fact that most attacks occurr in shallow water, and that the chance of being bitten are extremely low...
I still have an irrational fear of what is beneath the water past waist deep ocean water.
For me, I snorkel alot and come across nurse sharks or reef sharks and have zero fear....BUT, when I'm out training and not going out looking for sharks, it kind of freaks me out!!!

Went out for a 7:00 AM open water swim in The Atlantic this morning....my brother in law and I are swimming along and are only a few hundred yards into the swim when and a small 5 ft. shark swam right under me  . The water was pretty rough this morning on top of that.....I had a little short bit of hyperventilating and then tried to recover. Would you go in, or finish the workout?
I went back in and then tried to finish a few minutes later, but after another short swim, the waves were beating us up and we kept seeing too many fish that were making us a little skidish :( !
